     David enlisted on 15 May 1862 as a private in the newly formed Battery (Company) D. This company was recruited from Sumter County, Georgia, and was commanded by Captain James Appleton Bleackshear. On October 4, 1862, Company D was disbanded by Special Order #209, Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia. The officers were assigned to conscript duty and the men were distributed between the remaining batteries. Private Culpeper was assigned to the new Battery C. Battery C was assigned duty with the portion of the Army of Northen Virginia that was sent to Suffolk, Virginia in March 1863. His service record shows that he was killed in the battle at Suffolk on 15 April 1863. 
Death*15 April 1863 He died at Suffolk, Nansemond Co., Virginia, on 15 April 1863 at age 25. 
Administration*2 November 1863 After David's death, David Sneads Culpepper of Dooly Co., GA was appointed administrator of the estate. On 2 November 1863 at Dooly Co., Georgia,

     David S. Culpepper granted Letters of Administration on the estate of David J. Culpepper.6

Mrs. Mamie Haire. Dies at Residence On Ellis Street
     Mrs. Mamie Culpepper Haire died at the residence, 1849 Ellis Street yesterday morning at 6:15 o'clock after an illness of five weeks. Funeral services will be held at the Central Christian church this afternoon at 5 o'clock, The Rev. J. Glover Morris will officiate and interment will follow in West View cemetery.
     Pallbearers will be W. W. Taylor, A. J. Gay, Cecil Shealey. Layton Powell, Heygood Ferguson and Vernon Silas.
     Mrs. Haire, who was 68 years of age, was a native of Dooly County, but had lived in Augusta for the past three years. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. W. Tinley; five grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas W. Israel of Fayetteville, NC, Mrs. R. B. Veal of Miami, Fla., Mrs. R. L. Ledbetter of Augusta, James McDaniel and Miss Beatrice McDaniel of Columbus, Ga; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Bud Culpepper of Cordele, Ga; and three sisters, Mrs. Eva Statham of Cordele, Mrs. Annie Chambliss of Savannah and Mrs. Tiny McDaniel of Augusta.

Funeral Notice
     Entered into rest at the residence, 1849 Ellis Street, Feb. 17, 1943, at 6:15 a.m., Mrs. Mamie Culpepper Haire, widow of the late David Haire. Funeral services will be conducted at the Central Christian church this (Thursday) afternoon at 5:00 o'clock. Rev. J. Glover Morris officiating. Interment West View Cemetery. Elliott Sons.4

CORDELE - Edith Culpepper Wiley, 91, a native of Crisp County, died Friday, May 20, 2005 at Cordele Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, May 22, 2005 in the chapel of Hughes and Wright Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery. -A retired teacher and owner of Kiddie Korral, Mrs. Wiley was a member of the Cordele First Baptist Church and the Trinity Sunday School Class. -Mrs. Wiley, the widow of Marvin Lee Wiley, Sr., was the daughter of the late Samuel Jackson Culpepper and the late Leona Raines Culpepper. She is preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth Culpepper, Perry Culpepper, Olin Culpepper and Leon Culpepper. -Mrs. Wiley is survived by three sons, Lee (Sandra) Wiley of Pinehurst; Dan (Gini) Wiley of Palm Harbor, Florida and Joel Wiley of Moultrie; a sister, Gladine Fulghum of Abbeville; five grandchildren, Wayne (Gina) Wiley of Hawkinsville, LeSan W. (Del) Kimbrough of Pinehurst, Chris Wiley of California, Dani Wiley and Terry Wiley, both of Palm Harbor, Florida; and four great-grandchildren, Kallie Kimbrough, Carson Wiley, Wiley Kimbrough and Gracen Wiley.2
