Death* | 17 December 1651 | He died at Barbados on 17 December 1651. |
Biography* | | Reynold Alleyne was one of th early settlers of Barbados. He and David Bix visited England in the late 1630s, and when they returned to Barbarbados in the same ship in 1639. While he was in England, Alleyne married Mary Skeete, who is thought to have been a fairly close relative (probably a first cousin) of Francis Skeete. In 1640, Alleyne lived near Staple Grove in Christ Church, but by the end of 1642, he owned what is now Thicket plantation in St. Philip. Bix lived at what is now Waterford in St. Michael. When the Ayscue expedition, sent by Cromwell to reduce Barbados to obedience to the Commonwealth, arrived in Barbados in October 1651, Reynold Alleyne joined it. He died from wounds received when the expedition attacked Speightown in December. Some time oafter this, his widow marreid John Turner, a member of the Turner family of Salem, MA. |

John Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados1
M, (after 1633 - )
Name-AltSpell | | This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper of Barbados. |
Birth* | after 1633 | John was born after 1633. |
Biography* | | No record has been found of John Alleyne Culpeper other than his mention in the "Genealogies of Barbados Families". As middle names did not come into use in Barbados for another 100 years, it is quite likely that John Alleyne Culpeper was really John Alleyne, an orphaned relative of his mother, Margaret Alleyne. Some have held the view that John Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados became John Culpeper of Abemarle, aka, "the Carolina Rebel" John Culpeper of Albemarle NC. There is no conclusive evidence to support this, but it remains a possibility. |
Biography | | Regarding John Culpeper of Barbados, and his possible brother, John Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados: There is no proof of the ancestry of John Culpeper of Barbados, and it is pure speculation that he is the son of Rev. William Culpeper of England and Barbados and Margaret Alleyne. Whoever John's parents, it seems likely he was born in England as there is no evidence of Culpepers in Barbados as early as 1644. The only certain reference to John Culpeper of Barbados was on 27 Jan 1663: John Culpeper, age 19, gave a deposition regarding the will of Armel Gould. Thus, he must have been born about 1644. In a pedigree chart, entitled "Culpeper of Barbados of Bayfield and Elsewhere in that Island" (author and date unknown), a John Culpeper (died 1676) is shown with no ancestry and married to Eliza who had a will dated 1686 (Col. Sec.'s Office, Barbados). This couple is shown with two daughters: one who was married to Daniel Boyle and the other, Deborah, who died in infancy in 1676. It can be argued that John Culpeper of Barbados is the one who emigrated to South Carolina and became known as the "Carolina Rebel." He is designated on this website as John Culpeper of Albemarle NC. While there is solid evidence that John Culpeper of Albemarle NC did come to South Carolina from Barbados in 1671, his journey may have begun in England and only passed through Barbados on the way. However, if the John Culpeper who gave the deposition for Armel Gould is the same as the John Culpeper of the pedigree chart who died in 1676 in Barbados, then John Culpeper of Barbados could not have been John Culpeper of Albemarle NC, because of the latter's departure from Barbados in 1671. No record has been found of John Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados other than his mention in the "Genealogies of Barbados Families". As middle names did not come into use in Barbados for another 100 years, it is quite likely that John Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados was really John Alleyne, an orphaned relative of his mother, Margaret Alleyne of England and Barbados. It is possible that John Alleyne Culpeper of Barbados became John Culpeper of Albemarle NC, but there is no conclusive evidence to support this. [:TAB]DNA testing has reveled that the descendants of Rev. William Culpeper of England and Barbados, (who have used the spelling of both Culpeper (2-p) and Colepeper), do not share a common ancestry with the 3-p Culpeppers of America. |

Thomas Culpeper of Barbados
M, (1635 - )
Name-AltSpell | | This surname is sometimes spelled Colepeper. |
Name-AltSpell | | This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper. |
Birth* | 1635 | Thomas was born at England in 1635. |
Research note* | | Since Thomas Culpeper of Barbados stated that he was age 27 when giving a deposition in 1662, he is assumed to have been born circa 1635. The ancestry of this Thomas is merely speculation, but there are no other known possible parents living in Barbados besides the Rev. William Culpeper and Margaret Alleyne. Whoever his parents were, Thomas was probably born in England as there is no evidence of any Culpepers in Barbados as early as 1635. The only other Thomas Culpeper born around this time in England was Thomas Lord Culpeper 2nd Baron of Thoresway. However, this Thomas was made a Lord in 1660 and should have been identified with his title in any court proceedings in 1662.1
Bill Russell believes that Thomas, along with his brother Peter Culpeper of Barbados, were most likely sons of John Culpeper the Merchant.2 |

Miscellaneous | 1661/62 | Thomas Culpeper (possibly the Thomas presented on this page) and Mr. Culpeper were mentioned in account records and letters dated 1661 and 1662 (which appeared in Suffolk County, Massachusetts court files in a 1671 dispute about sugar shipments from Barbados). It was not clear, from these documents, where Thomas Culpeper lived, but he appeared to be involved in trade with New England men (John Winslow, John Stoughton, etc.) Other documents in the file referred to transactions involving Virginia and London, as well as Barbados.3 |
Miscellaneous* | 3 November 1662 | Thomas Culpeper, age 27, gave a deposition on 3 Nov 1662 in the settlement of the estate of Robert Challenger.4 |

Peter Culpeper of Barbados
M, (before 1647 - )
Name-AltSpell | | This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper of Barbados. |
(2) Research note | | He is referenced in a research note for Thomas Culpeper of Barbados.1 |
Birth* | before 1647 | Peter was born before 1647. |
Research note* | | Peter Culpepper was identified as partner and named as executor in the will of John Everwine, 9 Jan 1667, St. James Parish, Barbados. Presumably he was at least 21, probably older, so he would have been born prior to 1647. The ancestry of Peter is merely speculation, but there were no other known possible parents living in Barbados besides the Rev. William Culpeper and Margaret Alleyne. Whoever his parents were, Peter was probably born in England as there is no evidence of any Culpepers in Barbados as early as 1647.2

Elizabeth (?) of Barbados1
F, (say 1646 - )
Birth* | say 1646 | Elizabeth was born say 1646. |
Marriage | before 1674 | She married George Courtier of Barbados before 1674. |
Married Name | before 1674 | As of before 1674, her married name was Courtier. |
Marriage* | before 1675 | She married John Culpeper of Barbados before 1675. |
Married Name | before 1675 | As of before 1675, her married name was Culpeper. |
Biography* | | There is no hard evidence to support this Elizabeth as the wife of John. However, in a will dated 10 May 1681 in St. George and proved 17 May 1681, George Courtieran names Elizabeth Culpeper as his mother and bequeathes to her the land of his father, George Courtier. Thus, Elizabeth appears to have married a Culpeper after the death of her previous husband, George Courtier. Then, in a pedigree chart entitled, "Culpeper of Barbados of Bayfield and elsewhere in that Island", an Elizabeth is shown as the wife of John Culpeper (d. 1676) and she had a will dated 1686. The pedigree also shows two daughters from the marriage, one of whom died in infancy in 1676. Thus if this information is all correct, Elizabeth would have probably married Courtier prior to 1674, and perhaps many years before that. |
