Biography* Burford was in the Air Force for several years, and was one of the first pilots to break the sound barrier. The following is from an unknown source: WINS DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS -- At a day long spectacular on Armed Forces Day at Wurtsmith Air Force Base, Oscoda, Mich. Capt. Burford W. Culpepper received the D.F.C. medal -- one of the six highest of the Air Force -- for "personal courage, airmanship, and devotional to duty" on a history-making flight over a Nevada test site July, 1957. Captain Culpepper earned his reward by flying a "back-up" air craft supporting an F-89-J that launched an MB-I "Genie" missile -- the first air-to-air weapon equipped with a nuclear warhead. The captain's citation praised him for subjecting himself to "radiation blast effects" to help prove the "feasibility and practicability of safe fighter-inteceptor delivery of an air-to-air missile." Witnessing the Air Force honor bestowed on their son were Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Culpepper of Atlanta, Ga. who flew up for the event. The captain, who is the grandson of Mrs. Belle Culpepper of Cullman, was transfered on June 20th for a staff-flying assignment at Eastern Air Defense Force headquarters at Stewart A.F.B., New York.
As Col. Burford W. Culpepper, M. D., he was Commanding Officer of the SAC Air Force Base in Omaha, NE. He retired from the Air Force and in 1977 was working as a doctor for Dupont. Mrs. Eleanor Culpepper Willingham wrote in a 6 Aug 1986 letter that Burford "is Chief Medical advisor for Dupont. He has an M.D. Degree and also Ph.D."
