JOHN R WELCH story as told by his daughter Lottie M. Cole

John Reuben Welch was born on a farm in Dent County, MO October 10, 1878, the son of Fountain L W elch and Susan Headrick Welch. While he was very young his parents bought and m oved to a farm about three miles southeast of Summersville, Texas County, Misso uri. Seven children were born to this union: Mary, John, William, (a daughter w ho passed away yound), Josie, Thomas and Lee. The children attended the Welch S chool. My father attended Birch Tree Teacher's Training and taught at the Welch School and others in the area, then taught at the Ozark School in Dent County, near Custer.

One of his pupils at Ozark, named Sylvia Forence Gaines (birth date: December 3, 1880), daughter of Richard Taylor Gaines and Verelina Nelson Gaines, became Mrs. John R. Welch, February 22, 1900, by the Baptist minister, Reverend John Bryant. To this union four girls were born: the oldest, Lottie, then Laura, and Orpha (the youngest, born dead was buried in the Summersville C emetery).

We moved to Texas County and purchased a farm in the Welch School District. The first year I attended school was at the Welch School and my fathe r was my teacher.

In the Fall of 1910 we moved to Dent County and Dad purcha sed a farm know as the "Old Smith Place." We were near the west border of the O zark school district, approximately three to three and one-half miles.

Appro ximately 1916 Dad purchased the grist mill and home at Custer. This was our hom e until the two older girls were ready for high school. The family moved to Sal em whre my sister and I attended Salem Hight, the younger sister Orpha went to grade school.

Dad bough a home on South Pershing Street. It was a lovely hom e, so were the nieghbors. He had dealt in live stock, buying and selling cattle , hogs and sheep. He began to dabble in real estate and enjoyed that. Later he purchased the Charlie Hill farm. We moved out here remaining probably a year or two and moved back to Salem. They lived there the remainder of his life.

Au gust 6, 1925, while serving as Sheriff of Dent County an attempt to apprehend t wo young men from Iron County who were terrorizing famers throughout several co unties. It became a shootout and Dad was shot throught the leg. The bullet comp letely penetrated the upper leg. Drs. Welch and McMurtrey attended to the wound daily. The result --- a rapid and complete recovery.

Due to an accident (Oc tober 3, 1940) while transporting truckload of stock to his farm on Current Riv er, he suffered a serious injury. The left foot was almost severed from the leg which necessitated his hospitalization for two months. This left him crippled the remainder of his life.

Subsequently - he was in semiretirement for some time. When sufficiently recuperated he bought and sold real estate and sold car s for Mr. Pines. He built several houses. Two of them were next door west of th e telephone office, on West Rolla Street. That was their home until his death M arch 19, 1960. My mother made her home with us until her death May 28, 1969.

Mother and Dad were long-time members of the First Baptist Church of Salem.

Dad had been a member of the Masonic Order of Salem for many, many years, also the Odd Fellows.

December 2, 1975, Laura suffered a massive heart attack an d passed away December 4. She was married to John Gerling, he preceded here in death. Orpha passed away December 7, 1976 very suddenly. she was married to Dav is O. Carter. He preceded her in death.

I am Lottie Welch Cole, the sole sur vivor of the immediate family of John R. Welch and wife, Sylvia. Lloyd L. Cole and I were married November 25, 1923. We have on son, John Welch Cole, born Ju ne 8, 1930.
