McEWEN, Henry C. (Campbell)

  General Notes:

Henry Campbell McEwen began raising his family in Stonewall county, Texas on a section of land known to locals as the Durham place, located about 12 miles north of Aspermont and two miles east of highway 83, bound on the east by the Salt Fork of the Brazos River.

Henry Campbell McEwen and his brother James Algernon McEwen married Stovall sisters, Nancy Louise Stovall and Naoma Dale Stovall, respectively.

Nancy Louise Stovall died young, in June of 1921, leaving Henry and six children. In October of 1923 Henry married Mrs. Ruby (Reames) Francis, who had a young son from a previous marriage, Jack Francis. Jack Francis died young, probably at about 5 years or younger and is presumed buried in the McEwen family plot in Aspermont.

Henry Campbell and Ruby had one living child, Henry N. McEwen.

The Henry C. McEwen family moved from the Durham place about 1930 during the depression, moving first to Johnson Chapel about five miles west of Aspermont, then during the fall of 1932 to a sharecrop farm, part of the King Ranch, located about three miles west of Hawley on the banks of the Brazos River. Rent was paid with one-fourth of the cotton crop and one-third of the grain crop.

Henry N. McEwen wrote about growing up on the Clear Fork of the Brazos in his narrative, The Durham Place.

Henry married Nancy L. (Louise) STOVALL, daughter of Joseph B. (Berry) STOVALL and Mary A. (Ann, Mollie) HURT, in 1906 in Stonewall Co., TX. (Nancy L. (Louise) STOVALL was born on 2 Feb 1887 and died on 28 Jun 1921.)

Henry also married Ruby REAMES, daughter of W.E. REAMES and Anne (Annie) TILLEY, on 19 Oct 1923 in Anson, TX. (Ruby REAMES was born on 6 Feb 1905 in Hugo, OK and died on 15 Apr 1990.)
