biographical - Volume 1 By Gideon Tibbetts Ridlon - Published 1895
We have Hagens, Huggens, and Higgins, and all smack of old Ireland.
Some of the New Hampshire branch say their ancestors were "from
England." Did they come
from Belfast, Dublin, or Cork, via Liverpool; is Ms the way they
came from England? Ah! but they were Irish "foine auld Irish
gintlemen." Tilly Higgins came from Ireland and sat down in Berwick;
his brother Fergus settled in Scarborough. Both had issue and
streams of Higgins blood flowed out, broad and strong of current,
into various adjacent towns and into other states until nearly the
whole of New England, and sections of the far West, have been
inundated by the aggressive posterity. Fergus Higgins died in
Scarborough, in 1777. Dr. Edmund, a son, married Annie Swanton, of
Cape Elizabeth, and died in 1784, leaving six children, the eldest
son, Edmund, being the father of Capt. Samuel Higgins, who lived at
Black Point until about 1860. The old Higgins estate was part of the
Commack Patent, andrtheir title came down from Ambrose Boaden, the
first possessor, in 1640. In Gorham the family flourished and
produced several patriarchs, among them Capt. Saul Higgins,
now living, who, some time ago, celebrated his centennial birthday.
Then there was the father of the four Higgins brothers in
Manchester, N. H., successful business men, who went from Gorham,
Me., and lived to be rising ninety. Stephen Higgins, of
Hollis, is now more than fourscore and ten years of age. They have
been a very robust, long-lived race, possessed of a hot, flashing,
Irish temper. In Limington there appeared among the early settlers
men whose names were recorded Hagens. We are not authoritatively
advised of their origin, but as many of the first to make homes in
that Ossipee township removed from Scarborough, we assume that the
surname was transformed from Higgins to Hagens in transit between
the sea-coast and Limington hills. Walter Hegan was in town
in 1792. Walter Hagens was selectman in 1804, '5, '6, '7, '8,
'9, 'io, '11, '12, '13, and 1814. Aaron Hagens was selectman there
in 1824, 1827-8, 1834, '35, '36, and '37. Ephraim Higgins
kept a "putting up place," at Standish " Four Corners," many years;
and, possibly, kept some of the "critter," sometimes known as ardent
spirit. Then there was Knowles Higgins, of Bog Mill, but we
cannot be more personal.

History of Gorham, Me By Hugh Davis McLellan
Saul C. Higgins, the youngest son, married Fanny Blake of Gorham. He
lived and died on the old homestead above West Gorham which was
cleared by his father about 1794. During
the War of 1812 he was a sergeant in his brother Barnabas' company
of militia, and went to Portland with the rest of the regiment to
repel the threatened attack of the British in 1814. He was an
earnest, faithful member of the Methodist church for forty-five
years. He died Feb. 16, 1895, having reached the age of 100 years
and 9 mos., and having enjoyed almost perfect possession of his
faculties to the end. His wife Fanny died June 22, 1878, aged 85.
Capt. Saul Higgins and his wife had no children, but left an
adopted son, John Lowell Higgins, who resides on the old
homestead. John L. Higgins, who was born in November, 1829, was the
son of John Lowell, and grandson of Daniel and
Mercy (Higgins) Lowell of Standish. He was left an orphan at the
age of six months, and was adopted by his uncle, Saul C. Higgins.
When a young man he went to the West where he remained until 1877
when he returned to Gorham and settled on the old farm. He married,
June 15, 1851, Sarah A., daughter of Maj. William Warren
of Gorham. They have had four children, of whom
one, Fannie, is now living. She married, Jan. 9. 1897, Leander M.
Boothby of Gorham.

Bio of John T. Higgins
As found in REPRESENTATIVE MEN OF MAINE
A Collection of Biographical Sketches.
Prepared under the direction of Henry Chase Portland, ME.
The Lakeside Press, Publisher 1893
It is rare that a man at the age of thirty-one years finds a place in a work of this character, but to such
a place is the subject of this sketch entitled. Hon. John T. Higgins was born at West Eden, Me., in 1862,
being the second child of Nathan W. and Alma P Higgins. He remained at West Eden, and with advancing years took advantage of all the opportunities offered
him by the town and high schools, until his sixteenth year, after Ins twelfth year spending his vacations
working upon his fathers farm.
About this time his father, who was a well-to-do and retired sea-captain and who had laid aside money with
which to educate his children, three of whom, two boys and a daughter
Addie, were now living, suddenly found that owing to financial reverses he could do little
for them in this way. He, however, told. John he could have his time, which offer was gladly accepted, and
from that time, until the year 1886, the subject of this sketch devoted himself to acquiring and paying
for an education. He graduated from the East Maine Conference Seminary, Bucksport, Me., in 1883; and in
the spring of 1886 was admitted to the Hancock County, Me., Bar, having acquired his legal education with
Messrs. Hale & Hamlin. of Ellsworth, Me., at Boston University, and with his present Bar Harbor, Me., law
partner, Lucre B. Deasy. He immediately became a member of the law firm of Deasy & Higgins, which firm
has always had a large, lucrative, and important practice.
At the March election of 1886, Mr. Higgins was chosen first Selectman of the town of Eden, the home of his
youth. In this town is situated the celebrated summer resort, Bar Harbor. During his term of office he
inaugurated and consummated many reforms; and was the moving spirit which induced his town to enter upon the
construction of a splendid and much needed system of sewers, at a large expense. This system was completed
in 1888, and is said to be one of the best in the United States. This action on the part of the town has
had much to do with its enormous growth and prosperity during the last few years.
In June of 1886, he was married to Addle Blanche Whitmore of Bucksport, who entered the seminary the
year he graduated and graduated in 1885. She is devoted to her husband"s fortunes and has
contributed her full share to his successes.
He early took an interest in politics and has taken an active part, either upon the stump or in the councils
of his party, in every campaign, State or National, since leaving school.
In 1890 he was chosen a member of the Democratic State Committee of Maine, which position he held until the
close of the campaign of 1892 which resulted in the election of President Cleveland.
During the past few years several ineffectual but most vigorous attempts
have been made to persuade Mr. Higgins to lead his party as its candidate for Congress in the Third Maine
District, but he has felt that he could hardly afford, at his age, to leave the certainties of an active
professional life for the uncertainties of political life.
In 1891, his health beginning to fail, his physicians advised him to seek a drier climate and in October of
that year he went to Pueblo, Colo., where he has organized the law partnership, consisting of Judge M.
J. Galligan, his Bar Harbor partner, Mr. Deasy, and himself. He spends the summer months at Bar Harbor and
the winter months at Pueblo. His Colorado interests and business are very considerable. Since leaving
school he has defrayed the expense of educating his only brother, Charles
N., five years his junior, for the Bar, sending him through a fitting school and to
Boston University, after which he entered upon a most promising legal career, but a few months since was
suddenly stricken with paralysis and died in a few days. Mr. Higgins' health seems quite fully restored,
and he is now devoting himself with renewed energies to his profession.
In him is combined the business man and the lawyer. He is quite largely interested in banking and real
estate, and besides having the care of several large estates, he is almost constantly engaged in important
litigation before the State and Federal courts, his practice extending into several States. His eloquence,
coupled with his strong common sense and integrity, makes him a great power before a jury.
He has been successful in financial ways, and has shown his appreciation of these successes by giving
liberally to the church and to charity.

Henry Augustus Shorey
Secretary and Historian Fifteenth Maine-Bridgton, Me.: Of The
Bridgton News. 1890.
George Zoeth Higgins M.D. and his daughter Lelia Higgins M.D.,
practising physicians, residing in the village of Strong Maine, are prominent members of
their profession, and are favorably known throughout Franklin
County. Dr. George Zoeth Higgins was born in Exeter Maine, December 29,
1832, son of the honorable Ebenezer and Ruth (Smith)
Higgins, both natives of Bucksport, this state.
His parents in 1814 settled on a tract of wild land near the village of
Exeter, Mr. Higgins building a log house. He worked industriously to improve his
claim, and in course of time it became one of the handsomest estates in the
county. A man of strong character and good judgment ,Ebenezer Higgins served as a
representative in the state legislature and also as a
state senator; and for sixteen years he filled the office of Deputy Sheriff of Penobscot County. He was a
member of the board of the Underground Railroad at Exeter contemporary with General Fessenden and Stephen
Thatcher. He died in 1853. Mrs. Higgins was a very intelligent lady,
such men as F.W. Hill, of Exeter, finding great pleasure in her
friendship. She died in 1884.Mr. and Mrs. Higgins were active in founding the Methodist Episcopal Church in
Exeter. They were the parents of seven children. The eldest, Elijah,
who was a prominent citizen of Exeter, serving as chairman of the Board of Education
during the war, died in 1865; the second son is a farmer in Exeter;
the third, Ebenezer A., who resided in
Conneaut Ohio, died at Exeter in 1886; the fourth child, Harriet lives at the old homestead in
Exeter; the fifth, Julia, who died in 1865,was the wife of Captain
Cook, a wealthy ship-owner and President of the National Bank of Provincetown,
Massachusetts, who also has passed away. The sixth child, Ruth P. who is
the widow of James Grout, resides with a daughter in Somerville
Massachusetts; the seventh and youngest is George Z., the leading subject of the present
sketch, whose personal history follows. George Zoeth Higgins acquired his general education
in the Bucksport Seminary and in Phillips Academy in Andover
Massachusetts, graduating the latter institute in 1855.Persuing his professional studies in the Maine
Medical School. he graduated in the class of 1858,and completed his preliminary training with two terms at
the Albany (N.Y.) medical school. He began to practice in the town of Lubec Maine and two years later removed
to Pembroke, this state, where he remained until the fall of 1863.On October 28, of that
year, he enlisted as an Assistant Surgeon in the fifteenth regiment of
Maine Volunteers; nine months later he was promoted to the rank of
Surgeon, and assigned to garrison duty. He received his discharge at Castle
Garden, N.Y., in July 1866, and returned to his native state a skillful
surgeon, schooled in the trying exigencies of army life, and an experienced
physician, with perception by familiarity with disease. Settling in
Lubec, he practiced until December,1878,when he moved to Strong,
Franklin County. Here he has a beautiful home, and is closely identified with the interest of the
town. Within call of the citizens here for nearly two decades, Dr. Higgins has built up a large
practice, and has many patients in the outlying country.

disease of the liver.
Dr. Higgins was always identified with the Republican party, and
held a number of important offices in the state and the community.
He was for several years a member of the U. S. Board of Examining
Surgeons, and a trustee of the State Reform School. He was also
prominent in Masonic and Grand Army organizations.
Dr. Higgins married, July, 1858, Kate Ford Lamson of Lubee,
who survives him with one daughter, Lelia Higgins, a graduate
of the Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia, and a practicing
physician.

S. 8835. Kate F. Higgins, of 633 Congress Street, Portland,
Me., is the widow of George Z. Higgins, who entered the Union
Army December 31, 1863, as assistant surgeon with the Fifteenth
Maine Volunteers. He was promoted to the rank of surgeon March 20,
1865, and was honorably mustered out with his regiment July 5, 1866.
He was a capable and zealous officer, serving with his regiment in
Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, and South
Carolina, and much of the time was in some of the most unhealthy
localities of the South. After the battle of Pleasant Hill, in
Louisiana, in April, 1864, he was left within the Confederate lines
to care for the Federal wounded, and was detained there for nearly
three months. He died of heart disease December 11, 1898.
It does not appear that Dr. Higgins ever applied for pension during
his lifetime. His widow applied under the act of June 27, 1890, and
was granted $8 per month, which rate was increased by the act of
April 19, 1908, to $12 per month, this latter being the pension she
is now receiving. She also filed a claim under the general law, but
is unable to prove satisfactorily that her husband's fatal disease
was due to his military service and so abandoned this claim some
years ago.
Mrs. Higgins was married to her deceased husband July 5, 1858, and
was therefore his wife during the period of his service at the
front. She is now about 74 years of age, in delicate health, and in
very poor circumstances. That she is poor is evidenced by the
allowance to her of pension under the act of June 27, 1890. It
appears from the evidence on file that her husband contracted
malarial poisoning during his service in the South and that he
suffered more or less thereafter in consequence of the same. It is
highly probable that his death was partly attributable to Army
causes, and your committee are of opinion, in view of his long and
honorable service and the claimant's advanced age and needy
circumstances and in consideration of the fact that she is a war
widow, that she should have increase of her pension to the
general-law rating of $25 per month, as proposed in the bill.

Mr. and Mrs. Higgins to observe anniversary
-------------------------------------------------
Recall romance in Maine
-----------------------------------------------
Spring surprise on "Old Folk's" by having ceremony all their own- Journey to
Connecticut to have knot tied-
Husband is 86 and his wife is 88 years old- Both enjoy excellent health
---------------------------------------------------------------
Married in Hartford, Connecticut, January 6,1850.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Higgins of this city, will observe the 62nd anniversary of that event in their home. 910
Massachusetts Ave Saturday.
Odd circumstance were attached to several events preceding their
marriage. John Lane of Hollis, York County in western Maine, being a
widower, had wooed and won the widow of Aaron Higgins in the adjoining town of Limington. They had been "Published" according to the New England custom
and the wedding was set for a near date.
Miss Almeda C. Lane, daughter, and Walter Higgins, son, respectively of the contracting parties had not
been consulted, so they had a conference and decided to spring a surprise on the "old folks" by having
a marriage ceremony all their own.
Accordingly they journeyed to Portland and tried to expedite matters there. but learned that a notice
that a number of days was necessary. This was not to their liking so they hurried to Boston, with similar handicaps there.
Learning that Connecticut laws allowed for marriages without notice, they visited Hartford. and were
married finally surprising the other couple on their arrival back in Maine.
CONSTRUCTED TELEGRAPH LINES
Mr. Higgins engaged in many business enterprises in Limington until 1854 when he moved to Fryeburg. Where he was a
country trader nine years.
He then removed to Waterbury Connecticut. Telegraph construction was booming then
and he secured several contracts to run lines through the country.
He built lines from New York City to Albany. Thence to Utica and
Montreal, from buffalo to Toledo and New York to Boston by way of
Hartford. His last contract was for a line from Gainesville Florida to
Fernando, the land line to Havana.
He established a partnership with his brother in law, John W. Lane and engaged in business on Water Street, New York,
dealing in stoves and heating apparatus until 1876 when he decided to
retire. he bought a plantation between Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Virginia,
where he remained eleven years.
Though past 60 years of age, he had the "fever" for business again in 1887
and came to Washington where he established the stove and heating business.
Which he conducted more that twenty years.
Higgins is the American adaptation of the Irish name of Hagen.
Research has been made by Mr. Higgins to the effect that his early ancestors were
among the kings of Ireland. Oppression drove three brothers to this country ,and he
traces his American lines to those that dwelt in Scarboro Maine, near Portland.
Where Higgins beach is favorite summer resort.
OWNS ANCESTRAL HOME
The Lanes figured prominently in the early history of Maine, and Mrs. Higgins still owns the ancestral home jointly with her two
sisters. It is a delightful spot on the banks of the Saco River. and the been accustomed to
spending their summers there until recent years.
Mr. Higgins was elected to the school board in Limington the year he became
of age. and had as an associate, Dr. Bradbury, brother of United States Senator James W. Bradbury, whose term expired in 1853 and who was
the last democratic Senator from Maine until the election of Senator Charles F.
Johnson last January. They advanced the proposition to establish a high
school in the town and persuaded the townspeople of its practicability.
Limington Academy, as it was called was located in the village and is an active educational institution now. never
having encountered an interruption in it career of more than 60
years. Mr Higgins is the only survivor of the original board of trustees
He has always continued his interest in the institution, even though absent all these years.
Another pleasant memory lingers around the Maine Association in Washington
as he was a prime mover in the organization of this club. composed of former residents of
The Pine Tree State. He served many years as treasurer and there was never a deficit during his stewardship. he was President also in
1902.
He was born May 28, 1825 and Mrs. Higgins, April 7, 1823. Both enjoy
excellent health. Mrs. Rebecca Higgins remains at home and watches
that their comforts may be continuous and abundant.
Other daughters include are Mrs. George B. Scovill of Waterbury Connecticut and Mrs William B. Love of
Virginia
