CONFLICT in wives name: See: per Mark Haaland [email protected] Martha Runyon.

"Willliam Mitchell Clay's wife was a Lewis. Some people say that it was Martha Anne Lewis, while others aay it was somebody else. Martha Anne Lewis is supposed to be Fielding Lewis's Aunt.

Virginia Gazette, September 22, 1768, p.2
*****************************************************
Martha, as shown on deeds. Agnes, who deserted him, shown on deeds. No wife mentioned after 1771. A number of other sources have variously identified Martha Runyon, Martha Green, Mary Belcher, Anne Lewis, Lucy Green as wives of William Mitchell.

It was not Martha Green as she married his brother and it was not Martha Runyon as she married a younger William Mitchell in another state.

After ruling out all the possible folks he supposedly married but didn't, only Martha Anne Lewis his first wife and Agnes his second wife, her last name unknown are left. The source for these two names is from a newspaper article quoted in "Famous Georgia Families" by R. W. Rigby."
