"James m. 1st 1720 Orange Co., Va., Elizabeth (Betty) Todd b. 1701; m. 2nd 1733 Sarah Todd a sister of Elizabeth's, b. 1717, d. 1781 Culpeper Co., Va. James left the home of his childhood after his father's death, and came to Culpeper Co., near the end of the first quarter of the 18th Century, to live out his life. James was left out of his father's estate when his mother re-married and gave the entire Barbour property to her husband. He was a gambler, and soon squandered it all. James took out a patent for land on the Rapidan in 1734."

"One of the first vestrymen at St. Mark's Parish from its organization at Germanna in 1731 until the division of the parish in 1740 which put him in St. Thomas Parish in Orange Co. where he lived.
The first Barbour in Culpeper County., Va. which was cut off from Orange Co.
Bought a large portion of land in 1730 and began selling small tracts on the Blue Ridge Mountains to prospective settlers. He later bought back many of these tracts, and regained possession of others when the buyers abandoned them.
In 1733 a parish church was ordered constructed "Convenent to the Southwest Mountain Road with in a Mile of the first run below the chapel." The structure, built to replace the older "Mountain Chapel" was referred to as "the Mountain Church upon Mr Barbers" in 1737 when the vestry ordered the windows glazed. His property lay on the north bank of the Rapidan River in what is now Madison County.
Took out a patent for land on the Rapidan in 1734. He learned real estate maneuvering with Governor Spotswood
Served on the first jury in Orange Co., in 1734
In 1734 at the first court in Orange 23 justices were named for the county: Augustine Smith (of Shooter's Hill), Goodrich Lightfoot, John Taliaferro, Thomas Chew, Robert Slaughter, Abraham Field, Robert Green, James Barbour, John Finalson, Richard Mauldin, Samuel Ball, Francis Slaughter, Zachary Taylor, John Lightfoot, James Pollard, Robert Eastham, Benjamin Cave, Charles Curtis, Joist Hite, Morgan Morgan, Benjamin Borden, John Smith, and George Hobson. Some lived in what became Madison County.
A James Barbour, Sr. bought a tract of land lying on Island Run (now White Oak Run) from Thomas Smith. He divided it and sold it to settlers. Those who purchased this land included Thomas Barbour 1757, Ambrose Barbour 1765.
Also married Elizabeth Todd, Sarah's sister. Richard is thought to be her son, all other children Sarah's.
Will was filed in Culpeper County, Va.
His tombstone is at Smith's Cottage, the old homestead in Madison Co., Va. His daughter Fanny m a Smith and a descendant, George A Smith, sold the cottage before the Civil War and moved to Tx."

"Daniel's will was written on11/26/1683 and recorded on 9/8/1686, Stafford Co., Va. He mentions his wife Sarah, and "daughter, Susannah Day."

Mother: Elizabeth Metteneye b. 1616 in England


Daniel came to American Colonies with his brother Michael and they are believed to have been the first to settle in Surry County, Virginia, then to Charles County, Maryland and then to Stafford County, Virginia. On 5 August Daniel bought Wentworth-Woodhouse Plantation in Charles County, Maryland from his father-in-law, Thomas Wentworth. Wentworth-Woodhouse was comprised of 300 acres bounded by the Potomaac River to the North and the Matawoman Creek on the south. Daniel also acquired "Portowne", "Fernes", "Mathena's Folly", "Cowland", and "Hope Plantation". In 1681 Daniel moved to Hope Plantation which was in Stafford County, Virginia and resided there until his death in 1689.
