When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 or 22 November 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by C L Zinn. He was mustered in as a private in company K. [sources: 1, 2 (22 Nov), 5 (co. H), 6, 9 (22 Nov), 10-13]
He was transferred to company H on 24 December 1861. [sources: 1, 3]
He was discharged on 10 July 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability. He had an inguinal hernia on the right side. He had served for nine months. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (24 July 1862), 10-13]
On 29 September 1868, he applied (apparently unsuccessfully) for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]
On 13 August 1871, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home. He had a hernia. He was not receiving a pension. He wilfully deserted on 27 August 1871, and was droped by general order 5, 15 January 1872. [sources: 5, 9]
On 6 January 1875, he applied for readmission. On 5 March 1875, he was readmitted to the Eastern Branch (in Maine) of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, on one condition: that he do whatever work the governor ordered without pay for two months. On 31 March 1875, he was discharged from the Eastern Branch of the National Soldiers Home, as a wilful deserter. [sources: 5, 9]
