I am trying to find my brother and sisters. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia on September 1, 1944 at Crawford W. Long Hospital. My mother's name was Nellie SURRATT. I am not sure if her last name at that time was Sarratt, but that is what was put on my birth certificate.
My brother was named Robert and was probably born around 1930. My oldest sister's name was Barbara and she was probably born around 1932 or so. The next sister was named Sylvia and was probably born around 1941-42. I was born Dawn Dew Sarratt on September 1, 1944. My youngest sister is named Brenda Star and she was born around 1954.
I have only seen Brenda one time, 35 years ago. I so want to find my family!
Mrs. Luella M. Park adopted me, but continued helping my family financially as best she could. She is not able to tell me anything now because of her age (91).
Can someone please help me find my family. It is my life long dream to BELONG to the family I came from...as well as the family I was adopted into.
Thank you for any help you can give.

 Dawn,
We have No record of a Nellie SARRATT, with 5 children, in my database, but most of our records are before 1920. (privacy act)
I do have some questions! What nationality is this family?
If Robert was b. 1930 and Brenda Star 1954, this is a 24 year spread? (quite unusual except w/2nd marriage)
If Nellie SARRATT, (b. c1912) was age 18y in 1930, she would have been age 42y in 1954? (not impossable, but unsual)
No SARRATT/SARRETT/SURRATT family in the 1920 Census, for Fulton Co., GA. that could match Mr. or Nellie SARRATT
Daughters hard to trace, because of name change after marriage!
Have a Robert SURRATT, b. 05 Jun 1930; d. 03 Sep 1996 in Tyler, Smith Co., TX. (unaccounted for)
Have a Nellie SURRETT, b. 14 Jul 1900; d. Aug 1974, a74y at Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., TX. (unaccounted for)
Lot's Luck in your research. ...prs

Since I was adopted (and the story goes, my mother was in the hospital having me when her husband came home from the war) she may have used her maiden name on the birth certificate or her husband's. There was no name of a father on my birth certificate.
At age 4 I was found wandering the streets in Atlanta. Later in life, I was told that when I was found abandoned, I spoke a language that sounded like "backward-Dutch." English was evidentially not my native language. (Maybe I stayed with a lady that Nellie knew that was from another country??) Don't really know. The police took me to Juvenile court in Fulton County. Luella Park was intake supervisor and when I was brought in, she fell in love with me and took me to live with her as a foster child.
Evidentially Luella discovered who my natural mother was and, for years, tried to get her to sign me over so she could adopt me. Nellie liked the "help" she was getting from Mrs. Park, so, she kept on refusing to sign the papers. Finally, when I was 10, she wanted to follow her "boyfriend" to Texas, so, she "sold" me to Mrs. Park for a $15 bus ticket to Texas. Mrs. Park kept in touch with the family (without my knowing anything about it) until Nellie died. She was afraid that if I met and got to know them, I would want to leave her and return to my natural family. She kept everything very, very hush hush. Now that she is in a nursing home and can no longer speak, I guess I'll never know anything for sure.
I do know that Nellie SARRATT came from the South Carolina clan! The story went that she was the daughter of a minister, and in order to have more "freedom" she ran away to Atlanta. So, I don't know if she or my father were named Sarratt. I really think it was her name. I'm hoping that someone in the "Sarratt" clan will remember a "Nellie" and I can go from there.
By the way, Nellie died in Atlanta around 1970-72 or thereabouts. She died of a heart attack. She was also diabetic.
The One and Only time I was allowed to see or talk with my sisters was when Brenda was 10. She is 10 years younger than I am, so she would have been born in (Atlanta) about 1954.
Nellie SARRATT was, as I was told many times not quite the lady my foster mother approved of. Barbara and Robert had the same father, but Sylvia, myself and Brenda all had different fathers. I don't know if Sarratt is Nellie's maiden name or if she was married to a Sarratt when I was born. When she past away, she was married to a man 25 years old, so she must have been quite a character!
My whole life has been a mystery. There are no memories from age 6 back to birth. For some reason, it is all blanked out. I feel as if I have been "dropped off by a space ship" and just deposited in Atlanta.
Now that I am 55, I would really like to see if I could find some of my sisters or brother. It is a remote dream, but one I will continue to pursue.
Your website is fantastic. Keep up the great work! I'll visit often to see if anyone has heard anything. Thank you for taking the time to write and to post our names in the Sarratt "list." At last my name is at least among those to whom I might belong.

I am attaching a revised GEDCOM for the Sarratt family, starting with Greenberry Sarratt, Jr., your ID;I2466. This file contains some new names and notes, and some corrections of dates and places and one relationship change. I have also included notes which allows connection of this family with other families whose GEDCOMs are found in ancestry.com (Adams, Nelson, Barker).
If this will not merge with your existing, please send me your family group file for GBS, and I shall modify and return.
Day after tomorrow I cross that great threshhold to age 60, and I believe you follow me fairly soon. The best years are still ahead!! Hope you have a happy day on your birthday.

Hello Paul,
I came across your extensive Sarratt/Surratt/Sarrett family tree while doing a search for one of my Sinclair ancestors.
In your file, you note that Herbert R. SURRATT, son of Alfred A. "Roby" SURRATT and Dora M. CONNAN was living with Aunt Lula SINCLAIR in the 1920 census.
Is this the listing you're talking about?
1920 Federal Census/Fulton Co., City of Atlanta. ED 112, sheet 10, line 41. Census taken February 25, 1920. Street address 45 Carnegie Way. Dwelling #61, Family 73.
SIMMONS, J. B. Lodger. 50yo WM, married. Can read and write. Born NC, parents bNC. Can speak English. Salesman, ?listening jug? working for wage.
SINCLAIR, Lula. Head. Rents home. 51yoWF, widowed. Can read and write. Born SC, parents bSC. Speaks English. Keeper, rooming house working on own account.
Sweatt, H.R. Nephew. 18yoWM, single. Not attending school. Can read and write. Born NC, parents bNC. Speaks English. Casket salesman for wage.
Young, Cannon. Lodger. Nephew. 21yoWM, single. Can read and write. Born NC, parents bNC. Speaks English. Clerk for casket mfgr working for wage.
I apologize for the transcription errors - I can't put my hands on my photocopy of this page at the moment (we've just moved, and most of my genealogy files are still in boxes), but I wondered if what I thought was Sweatt was really Surratt. Also, given Herbert's mother's name was Connan, was the other nephew listing Connan Young rather than Cannon?
If this is indeed your H. R. Surratt, do you happen to know how Lula Simmons Sinclair was his aunt? I know the census record says "nephew," but why isn't H. R. Surratt's mother's name Dora M. Simmons, then? Perhaps these two young men are actually Lula's brother's (J.B. Simmons') nephews?
My Lula Simmons Sinclair was born in March 1870 and married Peter Sinclair in SC about 1890 (he was born in NC). Their children, McNeill, Ernest, Willie and Mamie were born in SC, possibly all in Sumter. Peter died in 1919, and Lula was living in Atlanta, GA as late as 1927, but that's where I lose her trail.
I would love to hear from you if you can shed some light on this particular brick wall.
Sincerely, Mrs. Dominick (Marianne) Masciantonio, [email protected]
Marianne,
Yes, this is the same 1920 Census.
