"Bell" SEAMAN, as a young girl of 18 years old in 1865, corresponeded with 2nd cousin John Harrison Surratt, Jr. (Part of the Assassination plot of Pres. Abraham Lincoln) in Surrattsville, MD. as well as in the "Boarding House" in Washington, DC. Her 2nd cousin Anna SURRATT, visted her in Washington, D.C. "Bell's" letters were confiscated by the U.S. Government and have been printed in several books regarding Lincoln's assassination. <--- [REF: # 90, Pg18],

Based the above information "Bell" (Seaman) HENRY, married at age 24 both her and her husvand died in 1886, age 38yrs, leaving the three small children, Murray, age 15yrs; Isabel, age 12yrs and Cecilia age 9yrs  No information on who raised these "Orphan" Children?prs

Letter Dated: 1st August 1864  From <--- John H. SURRATT, Jr. age 20yrs to his 2nd Cousin <--- Miss Belle SEAMAN, age 17yrs.

Yet, there were lighter moments. On August l, 1864 John sat in the parlor writing a letter to his cousin. Belle Seaman. From his letter we are treated to the young man's sense of humor. He teased her by saying that it was an extremely hot day, and that it was heat like this that "makes us Rebs. so savage, cruel and disagreeable." He continued by saying that "it is so hot, that we can neither eat, sleep, sit down, stand up, walk about, and in fact, to sum the whole in a nutshell, it is too warm to do anything."[7.] In Belle's previous letter to John, she must have mentioned to him that he had a great amount of "assurance." In his return letter of August 1, he thanked her, but said that he actually was "bashful, and perfectly unsophisticated, as very few ladies take a fancy to me."[8.] In answering Belle's question as to why he had not married, John said that he hadn't found anyone who would have him. "Often they have vowed, yes." Then John quoted Lord Byron, "But---This record will forever stand�Woman, thy vows are traced in sand." Apparently, in spite of John's alleged unfortunate experiences with womankind, he still had faith in the gentler sex, by saying, "If you know of any lovely angel, in human form, desirous of a matrimonial correspondence, just tell her to indite a few lines to your humble cousin and I can assure her she will not be sorry for it."[9.] John continued his letter ten days later. He said that he had been on a visit of a week's duration. Then John proceeded by treating his reader to a bit of domesticity. "Ma and Anna are sitting in the hall enjoying the evening breeze, whilst I am sitting over my desk, almost cracking my brain in order to find something to fill these pages."[10.] The following paragraph of the same letter to Belle is interesting; it demonstrates that John felt no animosity toward his cousin, Maj. James Sarratt, U.S.A., John asks, "Have you heard from your Uncle James lately? There has been some very hard fighting out West recently, and you know, Cousin Bell, that the foe has very little regard where he directs his bullets. May God preserve him, and grant that he may see the end of this unholy war without harm." In John's final paragraph he tells Belle that, "everything looks like starvation." Then he adds that Ma and Anna send their love. He continues by saying, "I wish you knew Ma, I know you would like her. Neither of us is like her. My brother resembles her very much. He is the best looking of the family." Then John gives us a view of Anna. Apparently, she had come in from the hall and had started playing the song "Hindoo Mother" on the piano. He mentioned that the piece is beautiful and that he advised Belle to get the sheet music. John ended his letter with another witticism. "To whom shall we Grant the Meade of praise? Ha! Ha!"[12.]

Letter Dated: 6th Februaty 1865  From <--- John H. SURRATT, Jr. age 20yrs to his 2nd Cousin <--- Miss Belle SEAMAN, age 17yrs.

During John's stay at home, he wrote a letter to Belle Seaman. He told her that he and Anna were going to a "regular country hoedown." Then he mentioned that the Smithsonian Institution had suffered a very serious fire. Finally, in his letter to his cousin, we are treated to another picture of home life with the SURRATTS that John seemed to enjoy sharing with Belle, "I have just taken a peek in the parlor. Would you like to know what I saw there? Well, Ma was sitting on the sofa, nodding first to one chair, then to another next to piano. Anna sitting in corner, dreaming, I expect, of J. W. BOOTH. Well, who is J. W. Booth? She can answer the question. Miss Fitzpatrick playing with her favorite cat a good sign of an old maid�the detested creatures. Miss Dean fixing her hair, which is filled with rats and mice. In John SURRATT's letter of February 6, 1865, to Belle SEAMAN, he mentioned that he was leaving for Europe the following week. He added, "....Yes, I am going to leave this detested country....." As it turned out John did not go to Europe.

Pres. LINCOLN, shot & killed on 14th April 1865

The President and Mrs. LINCOLN reached the theater about 9:00 P.M. April 14, 1865. They were accompanied by a young officer and his fiancee. The Presidential party was shown to a flag draped box, where Mr. LINCOLN eased himself into an upholstered rocking chair to enjoy the play. A half hour later, about 9:30 P.M. JOHN WILKES BOOTH arrived at the Theater. Pres. LINCOLN'S unreliable guard had left his post, and the entrance to the Presidential box was unguarded. JOHN WILKES BOOTH slipped along a back corridor and hurried to the door of the box. He sighted Mr. LINCOLN through a hole he had drilled in the door that morning. He silently entered, aimed a six-inch brass derringer at the back of Mr. LINCOLN'S head, and fired. After grappling with the young officer for a moment or two, JOHN WILKES BOOTH jumped from the box. He landed on the stage, breaking his leg as he fell. Quickly he rushed out through the wings and escaped on a horse waiting in the alley. Mr. LINCOLN was carried into a private house across the street from the theater. Through out the night doctors did what they could to save Mr. LINCOLN'S life, but at 7:22 A.M. the next morning, Saturday April 15, 1865 President ABRAHAM LINCOLN died. Some 11 days later, on Wedensday, 26 April 1865, JOHN WILKES BOOTH was trapped and killed in the burning barn of Mr. GARRETT, in Bowling Green, Virginia. Although from the start BOOTH was known for certain to be the murderer, in the wild turmoil of the crime's aftermath scores of suspected accomplices were arrested and thrown into prison. When these were finally narrowed down to the eight (8) prisoners - Seven Men and One Woman considered guilty enough to try in court.      1. Samuel B. Arnold (1834-1906) Guilty, Prison! (Jenkins) SURRATT (1817-1865)Guilty, Hanged, 1:00pm, Jul 7th 1865 Secretary STANTON invented an unusual and spectacular torture for them. He ordered eight heavy canvas hoods made, padded with 1 inch thick cotton, and only one small hole opening for eating, no openings for eyes or ears. Secretary STANTON ordered that the "Headbags" be worn by the 7 men "day and night" as a preventive to conversation. Headbag Number 8 has been reported, never used on Mrs. MARY E. (JENKINS) SURRATT. The 9th Conspirator was John H., SURRATT, Jr. (1844-1916) he fled the country and avoided capture until 1866. Was on trial for 2 months June - August, 1867; was reprieved by a Hung Jury, was not released from prison until June 1868.

Letter Dated: 20th April 1865

It is not known if Miss Anna SURRATT, age 22yrs received the followng letter from her 2nd Cousin Miss Belle SEAMAN, age 18yrs.

My dear Anna,      It was with feelings of deep regret that we heard the rumors of cousin John being accused of the assassination of Mr. Lincoln. I was rejoiced to receive a letter from him written from Montreal. It was written on the 10th, mailed the llth, and came here the 17th, which was just sufficient in my mind to clear him from all suspicion. The Provost Marshal, hearing I had it, came and demanded it. A copy of which is now in the hands of the authorities in Washington. Write at the earliest convenience, as we are all interested in your welfare.
