Parents of Thomas SEAMAN |
The parents of our subject Thomas SEAMAN (1820-1910) were
Jacob Vaughn SEAMAN and Lydia JONES (1778-1869).
Jacob Vaughn SEAMAN,
b. Aug 22, 1791;
d. Sept 15, 1834 of "dropsy of the chest,"
(according to a newspaper account), in Washington PA where his grave is.
After the death of his grandfather, William, in 1814.
Jacob operated the tavern in Amity at least until 1822.
Since the Amity property was not sold to satisfy the heirs until 1836,
Jacob may have rented it from the estate. The name "Vaughn," from his mother's maiden name, was passed down to several descendants and was pronounced "Van" and often so spelled. This fact gave rise to a belief that the family was Dutch or German, as if the name were "Van SEAMAN" or "Von SEAMAN" but records found subsequently indicate this is an error. Jacob was married at the age of 16 (Jan. 30, 1807) to Lydia Jones, who was then 28 years old (b. Feb. 7 1778, d. Oct 1869). She is said to have been born in Philadelphia when the Hessians held the city and her father, who had gone for a doctor to attend the birth, was kept in jail by the Hessians, not getting home until after the child was born. Much of the information on this line comes from her Bible. Since both the wife and mother of Jacob had the name Lydia, there seems to have been some confusion of the two women. per [REF:#002] |

Concerning the Correspondence of the 2nd Cousins! per
<---
[REF:90, Pg14] Gr-Gr-Grandson: William M. SEAMAN, [age 71yrs] in 1980 reports these facts! | ||||||||||||
"Pres. LINCOLN was shot shortly after 10:00 P.M. on 14 April 1865 [a.]
a few hours later authorities visited SURRATT's residence at 541 H Street
to question the occupants.
On the 17th they arrested all those in the house.
On one of these raids they (authorities) seized papers and personal
items from the house, including letters written by Aunt
BELL SEAMAN, age 21 to second cousin
JOHN H. SURRATT, Jr. and his
sister Miss ANNIE SURRATT. On April 20, 1865 the Provost Marshall (Named Unknown) for the 24th District of Pennsylvania came to the home of my Grandfather THOMAS SEAMAN and confiscated at least two letters of cousin JOHN H. SURRATT, Jr. to my Aunt BELL SEAMAN. One of these letters was from Post Marked from Montreal, Canada, signed "John Harrison". the SEAMAN family admitted that it was in cousin JOHN HARRISON SURRATT's handwriting. On this same day of April 20th my Aunt BELL SEAMAN wrote to cousin Miss ANNIE SURRATT saying that the authorities had seized the letter, which she said was written on the 10th April, in Montreal, Canada, mailed the 11th, and delivered to her on the 17th April. This she wrote, was sufficient proof the cousin JOHN H. SURRATT could not have been the attacker of Secretary SEWARD as he was accused. This writer can NOT find any record where JOHN H. SURRATT, Jr. was accused for the attack on Secretary SEWARD. All records found indicate POWELL/PAINE was the attacker and he was hanged for it. The April 20th letter from BELL SEAMAN to Miss ANNIE SURRATT was never delivered. This letter ended up in the War Department Files. On the envelope is written, over the postmark, "Taken from the P. O.", apparently in Washington Co., PA. or Washington D.C. This letter was never introduced as evidence that JOHN H. SURRATT, Jr. could hardly have been in Washington, D.C. at the time of President LINCOLN'S murder on April 14, 1865. Some of the correspondence between BELL SEAMEN and her cousins JOHN H., Jr. and ANNIE SURRATT are to be found on National Archives microfilm. Two other letters from JOHN to BELL are recorded in BAKER'S "History of the United States Secret Service." Another letter from BELL SEAMAN in Wheeling, West VA. to ANNIE SURRATT dated 19 March 1865 has a curious page, perhaps a bit of doodling, that says, "ANNA SURRATT presents MARY BELL SEAMAN to JOHN WILKES BOOTH, National Hotel, Washington, D.C." [a.] -- Another source says indicates the authorities, did not come to the SURRATT house until late Monday, 11:30 P.M., April 17th [REF: #005, Pg189 |

Letter Dated: 1st August 1864 From <--- John H. SURRATT, Jr. age 20yrs to his 2nd Cousin <--- Miss Belle SEAMAN, age 17yrs. |
Yet, there were lighter moments. On August l, 1864 John sat in the parlor writing a letter to his cousin.
Belle Seaman. From his letter we are treated to the young man's sense of humor. He teased her by saying
that it was an extremely hot day, and that it was heat like this that
"makes us Rebs. so savage, cruel and disagreeable."
He continued by saying that "it is so hot, that we can neither eat, sleep, sit down, stand
up, walk about, and in fact, to sum the whole in a nutshell, it is too warm to do anything."[7.]
In Belle's previous letter to John, she must have mentioned to him that he had a great amount of "assurance." In his return letter of August 1, he thanked her, but said that he actually was "bashful, and perfectly unsophisticated, as very few ladies take a fancy to me."[8.] In answering Belle's question as to why he had not married, John said that he hadn't found anyone who would have him. "Often they have vowed, yes." Then John quoted Lord Byron, "But---This record will forever standWoman, thy vows are traced in sand." Apparently, in spite of John's alleged unfortunate experiences with womankind, he still had faith in the gentler sex, by saying, "If you know of any lovely angel, in human form, desirous of a matrimonial correspondence, just tell her to indite a few lines to your humble cousin and I can assure her she will not be sorry for it."[9.] John continued his letter ten days later. He said that he had been on a visit of a week's duration. Then John proceeded by treating his reader to a bit of domesticity. "Ma and Anna are sitting in the hall enjoying the evening breeze, whilst I am sitting over my desk, almost cracking my brain in order to find something to fill these pages."[10.] The following paragraph of the same letter to Belle is interesting; it demonstrates that John felt no animosity toward his cousin, Maj. James Sarratt, U.S.A., John asks, "Have you heard from your Uncle James lately? There has been some very hard fighting out West recently, and you know, Cousin Bell, that the foe has very little regard where he directs his bullets. May God preserve him, and grant that he may see the end of this unholy war without harm." In John's final paragraph he tells Belle that, "everything looks like starvation." Then he adds that Ma and Anna send their love. He continues by saying, "I wish you knew Ma, I know you would like her. Neither of us is like her. My brother resembles her very much. He is the best looking of the family." Then John gives us a view of Anna. Apparently, she had come in from the hall and had started playing the song "Hindoo Mother" on the piano. He mentioned that the piece is beautiful and that he advised Belle to get the sheet music. John ended his letter with another witticism. "To whom shall we Grant the Meade of praise? Ha! Ha!"[12.] |

I was rejoiced to receive a letter from him written from Montreal. It was written on the 10th, mailed the llth, and came here the 17th, which was just sufficient in my mind to clear him from all suspicion. The Provost Marshal, hearing I had it, came and demanded it.
