265. Daniel Abraham SLOYER Sr. (Abraham SLOYER , Daniel SLOYER , Johann "Heinrich" SCHLEYER , Johann Michael ) was born 1, 2 on 13 Mar 1866 in Northampton Co., Pennsylvania. He was christened on 11 Jun 1866. He died 3 on 30 Oct 1937 in Northampton Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried 4 in Arndt's Cemetery; Northampton Co., Pennsylvania. Daniel was employed 5 as laborer in 1900 in Cement mill. He was employed 6 as laborer in pencil mill in 1920/1930 in PA. He was employed 7 as 29 years in 1937 in Binney & Smith.

From interview in mid 1960s with Mrs. Daniel [Mary] Sloyer, Sr. and Luther Sloyer 10/2002 with Jay Willis Farmed entire life, necessitating family to move frequently when younger. In 1904 rented farm house from the Binney & Smith Co., the makers of Crayola crayons. The propertywas next to the Easton plant on the Bushkill Creek by the bridge. The house was a very large limestone farm house with one hallway and room used by the superintendent of Binney & Smith Co., the remainder by the Sloyer family.. Luther Sloyer relates the story that prior to working for Binney & Smith Co. [then know as the pencil mill], Daniel was hauling wood for his relative Mr. Snyder to his limestone kiln about a mile past the mill. The superintendent of Binney & Smith Co., Mr. Cress[SP?] was impressed with the amount of work and diligence of Daniel that he asked if he was paid by the week or hour. The response was week and he said come work for us we will pay by the hour. In 1907 Daniel started in the Blackmill. He later started to farm property owned by the Binney & Smith Co. In 1921 the Company put the first running water and electricity into the house. It was a very large limestone farm house divided into two sections in 1948 and members of the family lived in both sides. The family lived in the house for 70+ years. Most members of the family work for Binney & Smith at one time or the other; Daniel Sloyer Bennett currently employed being the fourth generation to do so. Faithful members of Arndts' Lutheran Church, Forks Twp. Northampton Co. PA. Daniel was described as a tall (6'), slender good natured man with brown hair by his wife He died at late afternoon on a Saturday following a two week illness of very difficult breathing. ******
Linda Klosek 1/2003:
My theory on Preston and Mary Sloyer. In the 1890 substitute census I don't know who the Mary, age 16, is.
In the 1910 Census Preston is listed as single and Mary M. Ruth is listed as married 11 years with 2 children. I believe her 2 children were the Eva and Mary M. who are also listed. I believe she may have been married to a Ruth who possibly died soon after Eva was born. I think she then lived with Preston and had a child with him, Mary M. in 1909. I believe they married sometime between 1910 and 1912.

Baptisms at Christ Evan. Luth. Church in Hellertown, PA are:
Mary Maria Sloyer, b. June 8, 1909, dau. of Preston Sloyer and Mary M. Ruth.
Samuel Abraham Sloyer, b. Sept. 7, 1912, son of Preston Sloyer and Mary M. Hoffert.
Preston Andrew Sloyer, b. Sept. 24, 1914, son of Preston Sloyer and Mary Hoffert.
Emma Elizabeth Sloyer, b. Mar. 14, 1918, dau. of Preston Sloyer and Mary Hoffert.
Ida Naomi Sloyer, b. May 22, 1920, dau. of Preston Sloyer and Mary Hoffert.

Preston's obit, 1944, states his wife was Mary A. Hoffert and children were Mrs. Franklin (Mary) Klutz, Mrs. Otto (Emma) Schaeffer, Mrs. Charles (Ida) Shultz, Preston Jr. and Samuel Sloyer, and one step-daughter Eva Ruth.

Mary's obit, 1961, states she was Preston's widow. Survivors are 2 sons Samuel and Preston, 3 daus. Eva Ruth Sloyer, Mrs. Otto (Emma) Schaffer, Mrs. Charles (Ida) Schultz. (By this time dau. Mary had died).

Mary M. (Sloyer) Klotz, 1945, says she is a daughter of the late Preston and Mary nee Hoffert Sloyer. Survived by, mother, sisters and brothers, Mrs. Otto Schaeffer, Mrs. Charles Schultz, Eva Ruth Sloyer, Preston Jr. and Samuel Sloyer.

Samuel's obit, 1978, says he was a son of Preston and Mary (Hoffert) Sloyer. Survived by 3 sisters, Eva Ruth, Mrs. Emma Schaffer and Mrs. Charles Schultz.

Mrs. Eva S. Ruth's obit., 1980, states she was a dau. of Preston and Mary (Hoffert) Sloyer. Surviving are 2 sisters Mrs. Emma Schaffer and Mrs. Charles Schultz.
(I believe because Eva's real father probably died when she was so young, that Preston was considered her father since he raised her).

From all the above info. my conclusion is that there was only one wife Mary.
