The Santa Monica
Index
http://catalog.smpl.org/uhtbin/cgisirsi/pm0GMwh1zf/27490007/55/144/X
(part of the Library online catalog under the Santa Monica History
heading) is a selective index to the Outlook from the early 1950s to
March 13, 1998, when the Outlook ceased publication. It also
contains citations to a variety of books and magazines that have
historical information about Santa Monica. The Index covers the Our
Times section of the Los Angeles Times from its beginning in March
1998 to its cessation in September 2000. Current indexing is
available for the Santa Monica Mirror. Indexing for the Mirror
begins with the first issue of the newspaper on June 24-30, 1999. The
Santa Monica Index is the only available index to the Outlook and Our
Times.
The Library also
has a file of city directories dating from 1895 to 1961. Directories
are not available for every year but the coverage is excellent between
1912 and 1930. City directories list by personal name or by address
and also have a classified (yellow pages) section. Besides the address
of the householder, the directory often lists occupation and names of
wife or husband and children and indicates if someone is widowed.
These directories are useful for genealogy and for tracing the
locations of businesses and institutions in the city.
Local
institutions, such as churches, schools, and hospitals, are part of
Santa Monica history. Centennial History: First United Methodist
Church, Santa Monica (Jerry Brown); Saint Monica's Catholic Church,
1886-1986 (St. Monica's Church); First Presbyterian Church, Santa
Monica, California: the First Hundred Years Centennial 1875-1975
(Carolyn C. Reynolds); A History of Industrial Education in the Santa
Monica City Schools from 1875 to 1985 (Joseph S. Manning); A History
of the Santa Monica City Schools, 1876-1951 (Donald Cleland); and
Public School Register of the Town of Santa Monica District, County of
Los Angeles 1892-1893, and Saint John's and Its People by Sister Julia
Gilmore represent part of the City's history. The Library also
maintains a file of the Nautilus, the Santa Monica High School
yearbook.
