John was born on 12 November 1801. He married
Sarah Reep on 15 May 1826. John Shittle left a will on 16 May 1877; "I, John Shitle of the County of Lincoln and state of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of my Earthly Exestence do make and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say That is to say that my Executor herein after named shall provide for my body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my Relatives and friends and pay all funeral Expenses together with all my Just debts howsoever and to whomsoever owing out of the moneys that may first come into his hand as a part or parcel of my Estate. And first I give to my son Adolphus one horse name Cogen and one scythe and cradle and gearing for one horse and 2ndly I give and bequeath to my daughter Lavine one sorral horse named Bill, and one white cow and calf, and three head of sheep, and two bedstids and beding for the same the beding to be considered by my Executor and also one pot and one oven. And also one chest. And 3ly I give to my grandaughter Dovey one heifer, and one bedsted and beding for the same, and one bureau. And also I give and devies to my daughter Luvina one wheel and cards, and one loom. And all claims that are coming to me at my decease shall be collected by my Executor and be divided between my son Adolphus and Lavina and Dovey. And all other property of whatsoever named or kind it may be shall be sold by my Executor and be Equally divided between my son Adolphus and my daughter Lavina and my daughter Eliza and my grandaugter Dovey. And as to my son Pinkney and my daughter Mary and my daughters Ann and Malinda and my daughter Sally and my daughter Polly, I have given to them all I intend for them. And lastly I, do constitute and apoint, my son Adophus my lawful Executor to all intents and purposes to Execute this my last will and testament according to the true intent and meaning of the same and Every part and clause thereof, hereby Revoking and declaring utterly void all other wills and testaments heretofore made by me. He died on 22 May 1877 at
North Carolina at age 75. He was buried in May 1877 at
Shidal Hill Cemetery, Lincoln Co., North Carolina.
