If you know of notable Borthwicks who could be included on this page please email me with the details.

Please note that the historical information on these pages is a guide only. It has been gleaned from a wide range of sources, of widely varying credibility. PLEASE do not take it as 100% accurate. It would probably take a lifetime of research to develop an accurate and reliable history of the Borthwicks. There is much more to be researched and written before I would vouch for the information contained here.

BORTHWICKS IN HISTORY

I will do more on the earliest mention of Borthwicks in the UK. For the moment I will just post this extract, for which I cannot at the moment find the URL. I will post it as soon as it is located.

ANNALS OF DUNFERMLINE. 1069. - ARRIVAL OF EDGAR THE ATHELING, WITH HIS MOTHER AND SISTERS, IN THE FIRTH OF FORTH. - The old accounts relating to this "auspicious event" are conflicting in their details. When collated and condensed they read as follow:- In consequence of Edgar having been deprived of his right of succession to the English throne by "the Norman Conqueror," he, along with his mother Agatha, his sisters Margaret and Christian, and a numerous retinue, some time between the years 1067 and 1070, embarked in a ship to sail for Hungary the land of their nativity; that shortly after leaving the English coast, a violent storm arose, which, after tossing the vessel about, at last drove them, in a ship-wrecked condition, up the Firth of Forth to a point on the north shore near to the residence of the King of Scots; that when the King heard of the arrival of the illustrious strangers he left his residence at Dunfermline and hastened to where the wrecked ship lay, received the exiles most cordially, and invited them to the hospitalities of his residence, &c. (Vide Fordun, Boece, &c.) The details of these old accounts have long been doubted. In a work of great merit, lately published by Mr. Freeman, on "The Norman Conquest," compiled by him from original authentic documents, there is a long account of this event - too long for insertion here; but when condensed it reads as follows:- "In the autumn of 1069 Malcolm III. of Scotland was in Durham, &c., prosecuting his "war projects by fire, sword, and harrying." Edgar the Atheling had just then made his last venture against the forces of the Conqueror, near York, and was totally defeated; he, his relatives, and retinue, take ship and sail for Monks Wearmouth, where Malcolm King of Scotland then was with his "harrying army." Malcolm had an interview with Edgar. After hearing of his hopeless condition, he advises him, along with his mother, sisters, and followers, to sail immediately for Scotland and take up their residence with him at Dunfermline. The advice was taken, and the illustrious exiles set sail for Scotland about the end of October, 1069. They may have encountered rough weather at this season, but the wind appears not to have been contrary, but favourable for the voyage. the exiles arrived in safety on the north shore of the Forth, near to Malcolm's residence. On landing, according to an old tradition, the exiles made their way to Dunfermline on foot, accompanied by their followers. (See Freeman's "Norman Conquest," vol.iv.) Freeman's account is now generally accepted as the true account by critics, historians, and antiquarians. It will be seen that Malcolm, King of Sotland, was in England when the exiles arrived in the Forth; how then could Malcolm welcome their arrival? Why should "the tempest," if there was one, be made to force the vessel up the Forth, when that was their destination? In early times "much that was fabulous was conveyed into history;" then,"miracles and the marvellous" were "wrought up with incidents to give them a serious look." Of miracles and the marvellous in connection with Dunfermline and locality, see "Ann. of Dunf.," dates 1093-1154, and "The Double Miracle," of 1250. To many it may be interesting to have the names of some of those who were in the ship, which brought the Exiles to our shores. The following list of names has been obtained by the writer during his reading in Scottish history: some of these, however, may be doubtful.

Lords Borthwick, mid-14th century. Descended from Thomas de Borthwick in the mid-l4th century. During the 15th century they became Lords of Parliament. In 1513 Borthwicks fought and died at the Battle of Flodden.

Sir Robert de Lawedre, designed firstly, in his fathers lifetime,of Quarrelwood in Moray, and after 1337 of Bass. He fought alongside Archibald Douglas at the battle of Halidon Hill following which he hastened north to occupy Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness, for David II, so chronicled by Wyntoun. It stands recorded as one of the four Scottish strongholds which defied the power of Edward III. He gave a charter of some lands in and near his burgh of Lauder to Thomas de Borthwick, which was witnessed by John de Mauteland [Maitland], sixth of the Lauderdale family. Sir Robert died about 1370.

The Crusades. The legend is that Sir William Borthwick, in 1330, joined Lord James Douglas on his crusade with Bruce's heart, but returned home after their costly encounter with the Moors in Spain during which he is said to have beheaded their leader For this reason a moor's head appears on the crest of the chiefly family.

Notable Borthwicks are recorded here alphabetically, by first name.

Andrew Borthwick, "rebel friar" 1400s. Andrew Borthwick is referred to in a cyberstory re The Family of Admiral Sir Andrew Wood of Largo,Scotland made Clan Chief of MacDonald by King James V.

"At Beaton's Mill, his horse being alarmed reared and threw the King to the ground, the unfortunate monarch. Carried into the cottage of the miller and asking for a priest, the rebel friar Andrew Borthwick who had been closely in pursuit, was brought to him, and upon the King asking of him absolution and the sacraments the ruffian buried a badger into his heat of his noble victim, and then fled and was never more heard of. "For several days mystery enveloped in the fate of King James III. Suspicion arose that he was gone on ship and a cartel was dispatched to Sir Andrew Wood to ask whether or not the King was on board his vessels. The Admiral declared he was not, and gave the messenger leave to search his ships." http://web.ukonline.co.uk/footstepsofwood/woodlargo.html

David Borthwick of Lochhill, a prominent lawyer who became the King's advocate. Who was this David? When did he live? Was he the David Borthwick who married Marion Guthrie? And who was Elizabeth Guthrie, also married to a David Borthwick? A David of Lochill, Advocate, was educated at St Leonard's College, St Andrew's, "where his name appears among the determinants in 1525". (Halsey Borthwick, p.24)

David Borthwick, Master Smelter and Maker of Mangonels (cannon). For 600 years the Murrays, a famous border family, continuously held Ballencrieff Castle and David Borthwick was one of their tenants at one stage. He was given title to The Half Mains of Ballencrieff in 1507. Further references to Ballencrieff appear below.

George Borthwick, Archdeacon of Glasgow, Referred to in the index to Tyler's "Scotland" (cited in Halsey)

A Hugh Borthwick was one of the four murderers of James III at Beaton's Mill, Whins of Milton, Stirlingshire, after the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488. He also was responsible for the poisoning of the three Drummond sisters who are buried under the alter of Dunblane Cathedral, one of whom, Margaret Drummond was the secret wife of James IV. William Stirling and Hugh Borthwick, Shaw of Sauchie and Gray of Kyneff stabbed the King to death. Hugh Borthwick (his real name was Bean) was an apostate monk, who according to James Grant, Scottish Historian, was rewarded by the grant of an annual rent from a tenement in Stirling for his part in the deed. So .. was he Hugh Borthwick or Hugh Bean, and if the latter why did he use the name Borthwick?

James Borthwick of Newbyres. James Borthuik of Newbyres, is apparantly referred to in a charter from King Robert Bruce. According to Halsey Borthwick, John Borthwick of Newbyres, descended from the Lords of Borthwick, married Margaret Borthwick, one of the daughters of Johnstonburn, who had two sons to him, to wit, James and John Borthwick; the said James Borthwick, one of the sons of Newbyre, married a daughter of Murray of Black Barony, who had to him a daughter called Elizabeth, who was married to the Earl of Haddington and Melrose. (AEB cited in Halsey Borthwick.)

James Borthwick of Stow, physician in Edinburgh, buried in Greyfriars Churchyard. See Borthwick MIs in Scotland.

John Borthwick of Cinery, knight who had a son named William 9 Dec 1570 and 23 Oct 1571. Sir John of Cinery is also mentioned 21 August 1538, 9 December 1570 and 23 October (?) 1571.

Sir John Borthwick. "In the year 1539 Cardinal David Beaton succeeded his uncle in the see of St Andrews, and carefully trod the path his uncle had marked out. To show his own greatness, and to recommend himself to his superior at Rome, he accused Sir John Borthwick of heresy, whose goods were confiscated and himself burnt in effigy: for, being forewarned of his danger, he had escaped out of the country." Read more about the times of Sir John Borthwick on the Scots Worthies site.

The British Library Catalogue holds a Declarator in the Court of the Superintendent of Fife, MD.LXI. upon the articles and sentence against Sir John Borthwick, knight, by Cardinal Beaton, M.D.XL. It is not known whether this is the same Sir John Borthwick as the person above. Halsey lists a Sir John, persecuted by Cardinal Bethune in 1540 for heresy. Who was he? Did he have any descendants?

Michael Borthwick. Circa ??. In the section below on Ministers of the Church of Scotland there is mention of Michael Borthwick, father of Gavin. Gavin was born in ?? so this is one of the earliest references to a Borthwick. It is not known whether Michael or Gavin were connected in any way with the Lords Borthwick.

Nicholas de Borthwick of Leny, Balhuffie and Gourdounhall. He had a charter of the lands of Leny, in the parish of Cramond, on the resignation of George Crichton, of Cairns, Admiral of Scotland, 1st April 1450. He and Elona de Crichton, his wife, had a charter of the lands of Balwolsy and Gordounhall, in Fife, 22 July 1466. (Douglas, cited in Halsey Borthwick, p.25). 100 years later John Borthwick of Balhuffie, was served heir of Robert Borthwick of Gordinhall, his father, in the lands of Balhuffie, in Fife, 2nd October 1548. John is apparently also mentioned in a document dated 6 March 1557. Reference 80 years later to a Robert Borthwick of Balhuffie suggests that he was a member of this family. He was served heir of John Borthwick his father in the lands of Balhuffie on 15 January 1643.

On 17 February 1490 Stephen Borthwick and Margaret Makrerik, his wife, had a charter of half the superior part of Leny. (Douglas, cited in HB, p.25)

There is a reference to Edward Borthwick of Ballincrieff in the charters of Lords Borthwick, 14 November 1543 and 15 January 1543-44. ditto John of Gordinshall 9 Dec 1570 and 23 October 1571. Robert of Gordinshall is referred to on 2 Oct 1548 and 6 March 1557. He died at Fawsyle leaving a son John of Balhuffie.

Patrick Borthwick of Edinburgh. The Fogo Kirk web site reveals that in 1662, one of the lairds of Fogo - George Trotter of Charterhall - presented the kirk with two Communion Cups made of silver, by Patrick Borthwick of Edinburgh. These are believed to be the oldest Communion Cups still in regular use in Scotland. The Communion at Fogo, to promote the Reformed Tradition of the "Priesthood of all believers", uses these ancient cups and also a Common loaf. Both the Bread and the Wine are passed on from person to person around the kirk, linking each person not only with others in the kirk on the same day, but also with the many worshippers through the centuries.

Robert Borthwick. Royal patronage to the arms craftsmen is famously reflected in firearms and bombards. Scottish kings long had a fascination with artillery, from its first appearance in about 1380 or possibly earlier. The early James had a huge fascination with these pieces, inefficient and dangerous as they were. Both James I and James II, acquired ever more larger and powerful bombards. They were used to suppress factions in Scotland-notably the Black Douglases in the 1450s. Development in artillery was progressing at a tremendous rate with bronze artillery pieces began to come in about the 1470s. These pieces were much better than their wrought iron counterparts, being both lighter and safer. At a very early date, these pieces were founded mostly in Stirling, By 1511 however, the foundry had been moved to Edinburgh Castle. The foundry was under the command of Robert Borthwick, a Scotsman, although it is known that he had foreigners working under him. The guns which Borthwick and his comrades made were exclusively for the use of Royal household. However many nobles also made use of gun-founders, at home and abroad, to avail themselves of light pieces for the protection of their homes.

Would this be the same Robert Borthwick who made the bells for the Cathedral of St Magnus in the Parish of Kirkwall and St Ola (mentioned in the 1791 statistical account for that Parish)?

In it there is an excellent chime of bells, which, by the inscription upon them, appear to have been made by Robert Borthwick, in the Castle of Edinburgh, 1538; and they were furnished to the Cathedral by Bishop Robert Maxwell. (p.531)

Robert Borthwick. Appendix to The Blackfriars of Perth by Robert Milne D.D. lists Office Bearers of the Brotherhood, whose names occur in various papers. The dates given are only those mentioned in the papers, and do not indicate the precise periods during which the parties may have remained in office. Included in XLII (1) LII. Appendix: Littilton Papers, 8, LIII., L., 4, LXVIII, 3. Lease of Croft, 1547, p.239. is Robert Borthwick 12 1542-1547. In other papers Robert is listed: "1543. Dec, 29th (XXXV) Prior, Vincent Litstar, Thomas Robert, Alexander Galloway, David Cameron" and "1546-7. Jan 22. (LIV). Robert Borthwick, Prior, Alexander Small, Thomas Steill, John Branwood, David Cameron, James Dodds." The meaning of these entries is not clear from the information provided on the web site.

Thomas Borthwick of Princado referred to in documents dated 15 Jan 1543-44. Who was he?

Thomas Borthwick. Covenanter. Drowned near Orkney in shipwrecked slave ship. 1679. Recorded on a site dedicated to the Covenanters: "To keep in remembrance the thousands of martyrs of Christ Jesus our Lord, suffering their lives for their adherence to the Covenanted Reformation, 1661-1688, and the many thousands more who likewise suffered for the same cause and survived." http://members.aol.com/Puritanone/martyrs.html.

And also in relation to the Covenanters in the 1600s, a Mr Eleazar Borthwick apparently assisted John Livingston in London by delivering certain letters for him. Livingston was visited by certain of the English nobility who wished to be informed on all matters. A few days later Mr Borthwick returned with news from the Marquis of Hamilton. The Marquis had overheard the King discussing Livingston`s arrival and purpose in London. The King had issued orders for his detainment and for him to be fettered about the feet. Alerted to this, Livingston made haste his retreat. See John P Stewart's very interesting Livingston site at: and follow the links to the page titled "Return to Scotland".

ADVENTURERS

William Borthwick, Gold Prospector, Fiji. Persistent prospecting by William Borthwick up the Nasivi River was rewarded when he discovered payable gold in Lololevu Creek on 5 November 1932. A small gold rush followed. Gold and gold tellurides are widely distributed in the Fijian Islands, and the presence of these minerals was evidently known to the early Fijians. Baron A. B. de Este is said to have discovered gold in the Tavua area in 1872, but some sixty years were to pass before any serious prospecting was carried out. In 1932 Borthwick and J. Sinclair discovered payable gold on Vunisina Creek, a small tributary of the Nasivi River. Further investigation of this prospect, associated with the Tertiary Vatukoula volcanic caldera, led to the development of a number of mines, of which the famous Emperor mine has been in continuous production since about 1935. Descendant Jenni is searching for information about Bill Borthwick and his family in Scotland. It is said that he was born in Scotland circa 1860 then moved to New Zealand.

ARTS

Alan Borthwick, Singer and Director. From this site:

Alan has sung leading tenor roles in operas ranging from Poulenc to Puccini as guest artiste for companies throughout Scotland. He is probably the only singer ever to have performed all the tenor roles in Sullivan operas - including those written without Gilbert. Alan is now in great demand as a professional director. Alan continues to sing in numerous charity concerts and is now singing in the first season of the new millennium in Hail Caledonia, a Scottish entertainment which runs in the Carlton Highland Hotel seven nights a week over the summer months. In his spare time Alan lectures in Mathematics for the Open University.

Alfred Edward BORTHWICK, Painter is listed in 'The Dictionary of Portrait Painters in Britain, up to 1920' by Brian Stewart & Mervyn Cutten:

Alfred Edward BORTHWICK (1871-1955). Born Scarborough, 22 Apr 1871. Studied at Edinburgh School of Art, Antwerp and Academie Julian, Paris under Bouguereau and Tony Fleury. Served in Boer War with Scottish Sharpshooters and in 1st World War. Exhibited at the Royal Academy seven times any many other galleries (including the Paris Salon 1895-1924). Died 7 December 1955. President Royal Scottish Society of Painters 1931.

There is a wonderful gravure by AE Borthwick see Thoughts on A Course in Miracles.

Rona Moody advises that in Christ Church Morningside, Holy Corner, Edinburgh, a Scottish Episcopalian Church, there is a stained glass window with the following history:

BORTHWICK, Capt A E: West rose window was a thank offering by the congregation on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the church and was dedicated on 4th June 1926. It was designed and executed by Captain A.E. Borthwick, R.S.W., a member of the congregation. This is all the info I have on it, and none on him. Any thoughts? Best wishes

It is very likely that Captain A E Borthwick was Alfred Edward, son of William Henry Borthwick of Crookston and his wife Rebecca Cathcart. Does anyone know whether this is correct? Who was Capt A E Borthwick?

... and for something a little different, fictional (?) Borthwicks in literature and drama ...

"And Still She Sleeps," by Greg Costikyan This retelling of the Cinderella fable is set in an alternate England where magic exists alongside what appears to be late 18th or early 19th century technology. During an archaeological dig, Professor Borthwick and his crew discover what appears to be a living girl, deep in the grasp of some arcane induced slumber. Mr. Costikyan does a wonderful job with the characters, and the world and setting are fully realized. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable retelling of the fairy-tale classic. Originally appeared in the anthology Black Heart, Ivory Bones, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. (Web review - URL to be added when found again)

Alastair Borthwick Always a Little Further (July 1989). "Truly sublime writing brings to life another world: of Scotland in the 1930s; of the climbers who got where they did by hitch-hiking and sleeping in howffs; and who went hungry when they got it wrong." The review on the Undiscovered Scotland site says "Wonderful: you must read this book."

His second book was Battalion : a British infantry unit's actions from El Alamein to the Elbe. 1942-1945, (1994). One review states: "Most devotees of mountain literature will be familiar with Borthwicks first book, the acclaimed Always a Little Further. With the outbreak of war, Borthwick was commissioned into the Glasgow Highlanders & witnessed actions in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Belgium & Holland before reaching the Elbe & victory. Battalion is a military saga notable for its freshness & great historical value."

John Borthwick is one of Australia's leading travel writers. When he's not there (which is often), writer/photographer John calls Sydney home. He is the author of hundreds of travel articles (most illustrated by his own photographs) and numerous books, including a collection of his travel essays

Title: OFF THE RAILS Editor: John Borthwick Publisher: Angus & Robertson imprint of HarperCollins (1996) ISBN: 0 207 19025 9 Price: A$17.95(paperback) 183 pages Reviewed by Ann Skea This is just the sort of book you would expect to get by offering a disparate, but literate, group of people a free train ride to the destination of their choice, provided they wrote about it afterwards. There are reminiscences, itineraries, occasional flashes of humour and, sometimes, a bit of history (or in one case, science) added to flesh it all out. It may be great PR for the Australian rail network, Countrylink, which provides its own advertising blurb on the final page, but great travel-writing which might challenge Paul Theroux's _The Great Railway Bazaar_, it is not. Mostly, the pieces read like school assignments. Well written, but lacking inspiration. Nevertheless, there are a few entertaining and innovative pieces. Travel-writer, Susan Kurosawa, ventured into the wilds of Moree to report on the strange traditional rituals taking place at the Council Spa Baths, and at the annual Picnic day Races. Archibald Prize winner (1996), Wendy Sharp's illustrated 'postcards' from Melbourne are refreshingly different. And by far the best piece in the book is that by editor, John Borthwick. He gives a vivid, funny and imaginative description of the various characters who shared his journey north, until he jumped train at Byron Bay in favour of "standing" people, a jazz band called 'Trio Los Conscious', and a few hours _off_ the rails. John's conclusion, after a full weekend of rail rides, was that it was definitely better to arrive than to travel. Copyright (c) Ann Skea 1996 http://www.zeta.org.au/~annskea/

John Borthwick. Persian Nights, Iranian Days. Iran/General Kerman, 1000 km southwest of Teheran, is the gateway to an extraordinary ghost city, Bam, that's little known beyond Iran. Shimmering in the desert light, a two-square kilometre maze of avenues, alleys, homes and a Zoroastrian fire temple is made entirely of mud brick and is crowned by the battlements of a citadel. Although it looks much like a Crusader fortress, the Arg e Bam citadel has no connection with that era. Indeed, Bam's origins - thought to have been some 2000 years ago - are lost in the dust of unwritten history

John Borthwick. Buenos Aires: Tango Town. Argentina/Buenos Aires Buenos Aires is a bright city of melancholia set to a dance-step. A tango town of once-fabulous wealth and now of nostalgic mansions gone to delicious decrepitude. City of jackbooted generals and the Mothers of the Disappeared, of Maradona and even, briefly, of Madonna...

John David Borthwick. Edinburgh-born Author and Artist. J D Borthwick (1825-c.1900) was the son of Dr George Augustus Borthwick of Edinburgh and Janet Kinnear. Borthwick travelled to California in 1851, crossing the Isthmus at Chagres, an Englishman searching for his fortune in the Gold Rush. He wroteThree Years in California. (Edinburgh & London, 1857). He also observed the wild and chaotic life of the era, and portrayed the gambling element of it in several of the lithographs illustrating his narrative. One of those is "Monte in the Mines". In 1860 Borthwick returned to Britian, where his paintings were exhibited in several galleries including the Royal Academy. Three years in California focuses on his experiences mining gold and quartz at Hangtown, Foster's Bar, Downieville, Mississippi Bar, Jacksonville, and Carson's Hill. He devotes much attention to social life in the camps as well as mining techniques, describing crime, the Chinese and French and other ethnic groups, and holidays and public entertainments. Borthwick illustrated the book with eight of his own lithographs which are considered the most realistic of the period for California.

BUSINESS and INDUSTRY

Anderson Andy Borthwick of San Diego, California. The memorial to him on the San Diego Online pages states:

He was among the rarest in all the human subspecies: a banker regularly described as compassionate. A graduate of San Diego High School, Andy Borthwick earned spare change as a bank messenger boy. He started in 1915and stayed. Coming up through the ranks, he was named president of California First Bank in 1950. During the 1940s, 50s and 60s, his name was synonymous with the banking industry in San Diego. He retired in 1966 after 51 years with the bank. A lifetime golfer who ranked among the top senior golfers in the country, Borthwick was one of those most instrumental in establishing the San Diego Open. His philanthropy ranged from the San Diego Zoo to the YMCA to the Childrens Convalescent Home.

South Coast Today: Daily Digest for 9/1/96 contains the following article:

Big Apple is media capital of cyberspace Young entrepreneurs flock to start firms EDITOR'S NOTE -- Youthful adventurers in cyberspace have turned the Big Apple into the "new media" capital of the world. Online computer services have generated thousands of businesses, a cutting-edge community of Web-page designers, programmers, and Internet entrepreneurs. By Kathleen Sampey, Associated Press writer
NEW YORK -- John Borthwick at age 30 is considered a senior in a cyberspace industry where executives and department heads are barely past the legal drinking age. His 2-year-old Internet Web site, called Total New York, is timeworn in New York's upstart "new media" industry, the East Coast's equivalent of California's Silicon Valley.
...
Mr. Borthwick, a London native who graduated from the Wharton School of Business, co-founded Web Partners from his apartment with $50,000 from private investors and another $50,000 of his own and his partner's money in 1994. That same year in Manhattan's cyber-trendy Chelsea district, he launched Total New York as a subsidiary. TNY had seven employees then. It now has 30. Clad in his usual workday attire of blue jeans and a casual, button-down shirt, Mr. Borthwick is evasive about whether his company is profitable, but predicts future revenue will come partially by charging users who visit his all-about-New York Web site. "New York is exactly the place to be doing this now," he says. "The logistics of starting a company in the United States are so much easier than Europe." The city also has risk-taking venture capitalists, he says, something Europe lacks in comparable numbers.

Toni Borthwick. Women masters smashing track records Svetlana Masterkova, Russia's 28-year-old superstar, may have been in the spotlight for her world-record breaking efforts on the track last summer but several age-group women's stars also did some rather impressive record-busting as well. Great Britain's Carolyn Oxton in the 50+ division led the way, beginning with a sensational two-day double in late July. A day after blasting her own 1500 meters standard of 4:54.3 down to 4:50.5, she lowered the 800 meters record from 2:22.03 to 2:21.29. Then on September 1, Oxton took the metric mile through the 4:50 barrier, posting a 4:48.78. Another Briton, ex-swimmer-turned-track-star Toni Borthwick, broke Shirley Brasher's W65 record for 800 meters with a 2:54.93 at the British National Veterans championships. A couple of records for 200 meters were also set at the European Championships by Germany's Brunhilde Hoffman (28.13, W55) and Holland's Corrie Roovers (29.43, W60).
