     John M. Voiles (Junior) was born on 20 July 1845 in Illinois.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of (?) Voiles. In 1900, his parents' birthplaces are given as Kentucky and Virginia. On the 1910 census, he gives his father's birthplace as Ireland and his mother's birthplace as Holland.
          John M. Voiles (Junior) served in the military during the Civil War. Enlistment wasn't easy for him. The first time he tried to enlist in G Co. 9th Cav Reg IA but was rejected by the Mustering Officer on 1 September 1863. He tried again and was successful on 27 May 1864 he enlisted as a private in E Company 46th Infantry Reg. Iowa. He was 18 years old. The unit mustered out on 23 September 1864 from Davenport, Scott County, Iowa.6
          John married Julia Ann Millslagle, daughter of Samuel Milslagel and Hannah Wickham, circa 1868. He was about 23 and she was about 20.1,7,8 John and Julia had at least two children. These children are Stella and Velma C..
          John, age 23, and Julia, age 22, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household were two children: Juliette (age 6), and Charles (age 4).9 John worked as a "common laborer." His real estate was valued at $200 and his personal estate was valued at $300.10 Follow the link to see the census image.           John, age 34, and Julia, age 32, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Steamboat Rock, Hardin County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Etta (age 15) and Stella (age 4).1,11 He reportedly worked as a saddler on the 1880 census but when I checked the record, he is listed as a laborer.1,11 Follow the link to see the census image.           John, age 54, and Julia, age 51, were enumerated on the 1900 Federal Census at Market Street in Steamboat Rock. Also enumerated in this household were their daughter, Velma (age 8), and a 7 year-old "boarder", Ray Randall. They own their house with a mortgage. Julia has given birth to 5 children but only 3 are still living. I don't know which husband is the father of her dead children.12 John worked as a butcher.12 Follow the link to see the census image.           John, age 64, and Julia, age 61, were enumerated on the 1910 Federal Census in Steamboat Rock. Steamboat Rock is in Clay Township.13 John worked as a farmer.13 Follow the link to see the census image. John N.           John applied for a military pension on 15 June 1910 with the class of "invalid". He was given certificate # 550961.14 He was a member of Grand Army of the Republic.15 John died on 6 March 1915 probably in Steamboat Rock.15 He was 69 years old. He was buried in Steamboat Rock Cemetery in Steamboat Rock.15
