Marion Monroe Cook (1856-1913)

Marion was the 2nd child of Solomon and Martha Cook and was born March 20, 1856. Grandson of Hence Marvin Cook.

Marion grew up fatherless from the age of 6 since Solomon had joined the NC Infantry in 1862 and died in Camp Douglas POW camp 2 years later.

Marion lived with his mother, 3 brothers and one sister on the family farm near East Laport, Jackson Co., NC.

After the Civil War, with money hard to come by, Marion left the family farm around 1873 when he was 17 looking for work around Atlanta that was in a rebuilding phase. As we have all heard, Sherman and his men had burned a good many homes on his march to the sea. Each time Marion would travel to the Atlanta area he would take of load of mountain shrubs and bushes to help landscape Altanta. He would always stop by a certain resturant run by William and Catherine Bone of Dallas, Ga. to eat. Their daughter, Ann, was only 12 when Marion first started traveling to Atlanta and he didn't pay much attention to her as she served him his food. But as time went by and Ann turned into a young beautiful lady, she caught Marion's eye and they began to court.

Marion and Ann (March 1, 1861 - August 31, 1905) were married around 1879 when she was 18 and he was 23. After their first child, Mamie, was born, they moved back to Wolf Mountain, NC in the Canada Township of Jackson County. When Ann died at age 44, she left behind 7 children at home including 4 girls aged 6 to 15. Her oldest daughter Mamie (age 23) may have helped her father Marion raise the other children.

In 1901, M. M. Cook bought a tract of land from T. C. Galloway et ux. This is recorded in deed book 28 page 570.

Marion Monroe Cook lived at Wolf mountain till he died September 8, 1913. Marion and Ann are buried at Wolf Creek Cementery beside Marion's brother Thomas.
