Narrative

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette 08 May 1908
FIRE AT HATHERLEIGH.
SMART WORK.

A little: before 5 o'clock a few morning since the inhabitants of Hatherleigh were aroused by an alarm of fire, which it transpired had been discovered at Wadlands, Higher-street, occupied by Mr. John Trenaman, junr., butcher.
.....The Fire Brigade was on the spot with commendable promptitude, and had the engine at work within a few minutes of receiving the alarm.
.....This achievement, however, was surpassed by Mr. Heard, the caretaker of the waterworks, who had the water turned on and the hydrant fixed before the engine arrived. The reservoir was full, there was a plentiful supply of water, and in a very short time the fire was extinguished.
.....Police Sergeant. Hill arrived early, and found a gas pipe had been melted. The escape of gas helped to feed the fire. He quickly turned off the gas, and this had a considerable effect in reducing the fire. Sergeant. H. Hill was in charge of the volunteer Fire Brigade, and ex Colour Sergeant E Palmer skilfully manipulated the hose. Mr. J. J. Balkwill, vice-chairman of the Parish Council, was in charge of the hose attached to the hydrant, but this department of the Fire Brigade was not required.
.....Plenty of willing helpers were early on the scene, and the furniture both of Mr. Trenaman and Mr. Causley (who occupied part of the house) was soon removed. A good deal of the furniture was injured by fire and water and a hasty removal. The kitchen, which was the source of the fire, and the room above, suffered a good of damage. .....Mr. Trenaman had been posting up his books the previous night, and had left them on the table. All except the ledger and the buying account book were destroyed, The origin of the fire is unknown. It is understood the damage is covered by insurance.
