Jacobus Hrankowski [Nobility]
Birth Name |
Jacobus Hrankowski [Nobility] 1a 2a 2b 3a
I understand that my grandmother would have lost her family nobility when she married Jacob but she would have assumed Jacobs. This relates to her family. I have come across several variations for the Hrankowski's coat of arms but I am not sure of the right one. I have had some enquiries made in Europe and I don't think it's the type of Nobility with castles etc. I think its more the primitive "knight" type, warriors etc.. I do believe they were a higher class than the norm but not "Royalty". - Joe Hanks |

Jacob was a Roman Catholic (Holy Ghost Church) I was told he got mad at them and the whole family converted to Anglicanism. I was raised an Anglican. After I joined the force [R.C.M.P.] , St Barnabus Church in Winnipeg built a new building. My mother donated a pew to my father and Alice [Helena] donated a pew to her husband Joe Kitkoski. Years later after my mother died I donated a stained glass window to that church in her memory and Alice [Helena] donated a window to the Hankowski family. from Joseph Hanks |

Occupation |

Occupation | about 1912 | Manitoba, Canada | Hotel owner, Como Hotel in Gimli |
Jacob purchased a hotel in the Icelandic Community of Gimli Manitoba on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. At that time it was the railhead and Northern Manitoba and possibly the Northwest Territories were serviced and supplied from there by dog-team. Jacob bought a Hotel in Gimli but he lost it because he extended to much credit to his customers who didn't pay. Where did Jacob get the money to buy the hotel with so many people to feed and clothe? Many Austrian Nationals in Canada were arrested, detained or paroled. Their property was seized and sold for $.10 on the $1.00 (10% of value). Is this what happened to the hotel and the family were too ashamed to tell us? (The hotel burned down when I was a teen-ager). |

If they went broke in the hotel where did they get the money to buy the house.
1149 Selkirk Ave., in Winnipeg. I was raised a block away so I am quite familiar with it. A very small 2 bedroom home for so many in the family (one bathroom) probably long line ups. This property, very old, remained in the family until just before Alice died in 1993. She lived most of her life there. |

Narrative
Said to have had 13 Children ?
8 Children on 1916 Canada census.
There were 10 [11] children in the union between Jacob and his wife Michaelina. In my research I have found that for some unknown reason, many of the births in the family were not registered. This caused problems for some of them when they applied for for their old age pensions. Jacob did keep a handwritten record of the children born in Canada, in his passport. I outline what I know about each. I have no idea who supplied the info to the census [1916] taker. I suspect one of the children.
from Joe Hanks, Grand Son.
Narrative
I also have my Grandfathers [Jacob] Austrian Passport issued by Franz Joseph. They were of Polish extraction. [from Joseph Hanks]
Narrative
Rest of his family were forced to leave that area after IIWW because they were Polish.
from Cousin Henryk Michał.
Narrative
On the birth certificate of Michal Hrankowski you can see the text in Latin about parents
' uteryne nobiles haeres bonorum "
They were old nobilities family and had property estate.
They were very rich people.
I suppose they sold this property and go to Canada with for example the gold.
from Henryk Michał Drewniak [E-mail 17.02.2013]
Narrative
I have had other friends who visited that area [small Village Krasne now located in the Eastern Ukraine] make enquiries & photograph the area for me. There were no current residents or relatives found. It is understood that there was a massive ethnic cleansing during the 1950's with all non-Ukranian residents relocated to their country of origin.
[from Joseph Hanks, 2012]
Narrative
Food for thought.
The surname of the woman on my grandfathers Passport is the same as the name on the last page. I presume he chaperoned her to Canada.
Wealthy English shipped their (surplus) children to Canada and supported them while here with an annual stipend. They were commonly referred to as Remittance Men.
The thought has come to my mind and others have commented, where did Jacob get the money to buy a hotel while raising so many children??? Could he have been a recipient of European Money.
