James Harrison was an elder in the Shoals Ford Salem Church as documented on an Indenture from Thomas Gray, wife Matilda Vining Gray, to Joseph H. Bradley, Nathaniel Davis and James Harrison (elders) for land to be used as a cemetery dated 25 Jul 1835. The oldest known burial in the cemetery was 1835 and contains over 100 graves covered with ivy. Many stones were not found and some were covered with bricks at one time. David Hall Craig's stone is there. This cemetery is now called the Martin Cemetery Sect 28, T3S R3W off Bradford Rd. across a field in a thicket of trees. NW Limestone Co about 20 miles from Athens.
From the diary of Rev James C. Elliott:
May 23, 1873: - Friday - "At home. Went to see Br. Harrison, prayed there, then home. Went in the evening again, then home. Light wind."
May 24, 1873: - Saturday - "At home, went to Joseph Harrisons where his father was dead, who died after 12 o'clock. I stayed till eleven o'clock today, then home in pain. They buried Br. Harrison this morning."
From Athens Limestone News, 30 May 1873 - "James Harrison, Esquire, an old soldier of the War of 1812, died at the residence of his son, Mr. Joseph Harrison, last Friday night."
We are still trying to locate church records :
MARTIN CEMETERY
LOCATION: SE quarter of NW quarter, Sect. 28, T3S, R3W off Bradford Rd. across a field in a thicket of trees. Originally known as Old Shoals Ford Cemetery it is one of the older cemeteries In the county. The land for Shoals Ford Church and cemetery was given to the church congregation before Jan., 1842. Thomas Gray died before Dec., 1841 and the deed to the cemetery and church land was recorded in Jan., 1842. The church is believed to have been established several years before this date. Gray acquired the land in 1818 and was living at this location in 1820. A daughter and son-in-law (Martin) of Thomas Gray were buried in this cemetery and it is presumed that Thomas and his wife, Matilda Vining Gray, were also buried here. The oldest burial was in c1835. This cemetery contains over 100 graves. Many may have been marked at one time but the stones were not found. The entire area to covered with ivy, making location of fallen stones very difficult. Some of the graves appear to have been covered with bricks at one time. The abstract of the deed is included here and was researched by Joe & Mary Craig. Copied March 27, 1989 by Linda Smith.
