Family History
--
John was a native of Jefferson County, near Mt. Pleasant. He left home at the age of ten to live with a farmer named H.C. Welth for three years. He was then hired to work in a brickyard for Morrison brothers. He would work for
farmers for room and board while he went to school. In 1862, he became a wagonmaster in the Union Army. In 1863, he returned home and started a meat market in Mt. Pleasant. He followed this until he married Emily/Amney. He was a Justice of the Peace.
In 1880, they owned and lived at the old homestead of Amney's grandparents, William and Elizabeth Danford. The census for that year shows them living in Washington Township, Belmont County. It shows that they have a housekeeper living with them named
Minnie Bigsby (22).
When his father died, John was paid $5 out of the estate to dig his grave. His father had been married twice. His second wife's name was Margaret. He had died from asthma. John was the third generation to be given the name. His
grandfather came over from England . His grandparents lived and died in Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio. There still exists the family home in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. The basement has the original logs (with bark) dated prior to 1870, according to the
local historical society. The rock foundation is still visible.
