Edward Stanley, Third Earl of Derby, K.G.
Edward, Lord High-Steward at the coronation of Queen Mary, and Chamberlain of Chester in the reign of Elizabeth, so celebrated for magnificence and liberality that Camden says, "that with Edward, Earl of Derby's death, the glory of hospitality seemed to fall asleep." His lordship died October 24, 1572, and was succeeded by his eldest son by his first wife, Dorothy Howard, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk.
Edward's second wife was Margaret Barlow, daughter of Ellis Barlos, Co. Lancs.
His third wife was Mary Cotton, daughter of Sir George Cotton on Combermere (Kent) Co., Chester. Mary married secondly Henry Grey, the 6th Earl of Kent and died 16 November 1580.
At heart, Edward was a Catholic, but belonged politically to neither the Catholic or Protestant religions. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1548, and was appointed one of the commissioners for advancing the Reformation. But, in the beginning of 1549, when the first act of uniformity was passed, he strongly resisted the disense of the missal and three years later (1552) protested against the act. His son, Henry, nevertheless was bred a strict Protestant.
Edward was the first Earl of Derby to be buried at Ormskirk. His will ordered a chapel be erected and a tomb prepared and has since been a burial place of his family and his successors. ("The House of Stanley" by Peter Draper, 1864.)
Earl Edward was one of twenty statesmen, whom Queen Elizabeth chose for her Privy counsellors, an office he held in the reign of Queen Mary.[xx.FTW]
