is the common ancestor of those persons bearing the surname FLANSBURG today.
He came to America from Flensburg, Germany prior to Dec 1679 and added his
place of origin to his name, probably in order to distinguish himself from the
countless other Jan JANSENS living in New York City at the same time he was.
Since Dutch was the main language spoken in Colonial New York he took the
name "Van Flensburg" ("Van" being the Dutch word for "from").
Jan Jansen VAN FLENSBURG's name first appears in New Amsterdam (now New
York City) on the 04 Dec 1679 when he joined the Ref. Dutch Church there,
probably in order to marry 1) Willemyntie DE KLEYN, the dau. of Hugh Barent
KLEYN, resident of New Amsterdam and Mayken BARTELS. Willemyntie, widow of
Barthemeus SCHAET, and Jan Jansen VAN FLENSBURG's marriage banns were
published on the 11 Apr 1680 and they were m. on 01 May 1680 at the Ref.
Dutch Church in New York City.
On the 01 Oct 1683 he was made free of the City of New York and as a
master baker was allowed to take on apprentices. At a council meeting held on
13 Oct 1684 "Mr. Jan Jansen VAN FLENSBURG" was chosen as constable for the
Seuerall Ward in New York City and in the minutes of another council meeting
held three months later on the 21 Jan 1685 he was listed as a baker, ordered
to bake bread only for sale on Saturday.
Jan Jansen bought a parcell of ground on Smith Street from Gerrit HENDRIX
on the 07 Apr 1682 . Later, on 04 Mar 1684, he made an Indenture with Paulus
RICHARDS for this same piece of land. Paulus was to pay 200 Pounds and 16
shillings up front and another sum of money of the same amount before the
hours of six and six on the 04 Mar 1687. Paulus apparently did not come up
with the money at the prearranged time as we find another document stating
that Jan Jansen received 300 pounds from Paulus on the 10 Nov 1687 for the
land located on the East side of Smith Street. A catalogue showing the
residency of the members of the Ref. Dutch Church in the City of New York AD
1686, shows Jan Jansen VAN FLENSBURG living with his wife Willemyntie on Smit
Straat (Smith Street). He owned at least one other lot, as he leased or rented
out a lot to Margaret STEENWYCK on the 08 Mar 1685. This lot was located on
Pearle Street south of the Fort and under the original Dutch Land Grants was
Block G Lot 8. The original owner of the lot was Cornelis PIETERSEN. About a
year and a half later, on the 04 Dec 1686, he rented out this same lot to
Fredrick FLYPSEN. Willemyntie d. between 1686-87 and shortly thereafter on
14 Apr 1687 Jan published banns to m. 2) Margarietje Maryken MARTENS [bpt. 11
Jun 1660 in New York City], dau. of Marten CLAESZEN and Margarietje Jannetie
CORNELIS and widow of Claes ROELOFSZEN. They m. the 16 May 1687 at the Ref.
Dutch Church in New York City.
The tax lists of the City of New York 1695-99 show Jan Jansen VAN
FLENSBURG as having two estates, the first in the North Ward and the second in
the Dock Ward.
