    John NEILSON, the son of William NEILSON and Elizabeth CHALMERS, was born on 29-Oct-1773 at Lanark County, Scotland. He married Janet WEIR, the daughter of Archibald WEIR and Janet AIKEN, and they had eight children. John died on 15-Mar-1837 at Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, Upper Canada. He was buried at Fife Cemetery, Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, Ontario.

    Forest to Farm, Early Day in Otonabee, pg221. "John Nelson and his wife Janet Wear came to Canada from Scotland, with their family of seven children. Three children were born in Canada. Two of thier sons William and Andrew were young men when they arrived here, and the others in the family were David, George, Arthur, Hugh, Jenny, John, Robert and Archibald. The exact date of their arrival in Canada is not known, but John, William and Andrew signed the petition dated No

  • 12, 1819 to Sir Peregrine Maitland requesting the right to settle in Otonabee. The family settled on the fourth concession, and by 1827 with the sons now farming, they were on Lots 18, 19 and 20 of Con. 4 and across the road in the 5th concession on lots 19 and 20. David had settled on the east half of Lot 23, Con. 6, and also the west half of Lot 18, Con 5. Hugh was later to settle on the west quarter of Lot 17, Con. 4."

He married, second, Anne RICHARDSON, the daughter of William RICHARDSON and Rebecca ???, and they had ten children. Archibald died on 11-Feb-1884. He was buried at Fife Cemetery, Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, Ontario.
