James W. Braden

Surgeon was native of West Finley

Dr. James W. Braden, 92, of Washington, formerly of Clinton, Md., died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 1999, in Manor Care Nursing Home, McMurray, following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 2, 1907, in West Finley Township, a son of Thomas Gray and Anna Zetta Danley Braden.

He had resided in the Washington, D.C., area from 1936 until the summer of 1996, when he returned to Washington County to make his home with his cousin, Mary H. Travis, who is now deceased.

Dr. Braden was a member of Windy Gap Presbyterian Church, West Finley.

He was a 1924 graduate of Washington High School. He attended pre-medical school at West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va., and graduated in 1928 from University of Pittsburgh with an engineering degree. He earned his medical degree in 1936 from the former Rush Medical School at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Ill.

Dr. Braden was a staff member and former chief of staff at the former Casualty Hospital, Washington, D.C. From 1936 until his retirement in 1986, he was a general practitioner in surgery with his partner, Dr. Joseph Rogers Young.

He was a member of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons.

Dr. Braden enjoyed flying and was an active pilot.

Surviving are several cousins.
