BANGOR – Leo J. Higgins Sr., 91, died peacefully May 18, 2012, surrounded by his loving family at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 27, 1920, in Hermon, the son of Catherine (Steele) and Thomas Higgins.
Leo later grew up on New York Street, Bangor, with his nine siblings. He was proud of his family, his Irish Catholic heritage, and he would often say "there were two kinds of people in this world, those that were Irish and those that wish they were." Leo attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and John Bapst High School, where he excelled in sports. Leo was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army, 243rd Field Artillery Battalion in Europe. Although he was a humble man, Leo in recent years spoke of capturing a German spy single handedly during the war. During his service years he competed in the GI Olympics for boxing, track and diving. Leo had a deep respect for the men he served with during World War II, and he attended yearly military reunions since the war reminiscing with his friends of the 243rd, "Deus Vult." Leo met and married the love of his life, Hilda M. (Barry) Higgins prior to his military service. They were blessed with a
marriage of 63 years and raised 13 children together. Leo and Hilda shared a true love and they both loved to dance and sing. Dancing to "Big Band" music was a treat for spectators at dances throughout the years and also for their children who sometimes caught a peek of their dancing skills while at home. It was also a treat to hear Leo pay the harmonica. Leo was employed as a railroad engineer for Maine Central Railroad for 45 years before retiring in 1990. Leo was also the union president for United Transportation Union for many years while employed through MCRR. Leo was a devout Catholic and he had a deep faith in God and his Catholic religion. He also had a deep and compassionate love for his family and John Bapst High School, some days it was a toss up which he loved more. Throughout the years you could find Leo at many games supporting the Crusaders and cheering fiercely. He also came to be very well known by the officials of these sporting events. Leo was very giving and for more than 20 years handed out a cold soda to every John Bapst High School Varsity football player following every away game. Many people commented throughout the years that Leo bled purple and white. Leo was a wonderful son, brother, father, grandfather and friend. He was loving and gentle. He was extremely proud of his children and he took pride in their accomplishments during the years. Leo was also very proud of his grandchildren and he enjoyed spending time with family no matter what the occasion. Leo especially loved spending time at his camp on Beech Hill Pond. He enjoyed mixing cement and creating marvelous walkways at "the lake" while encouraging his children and grandchildren to collect and pick rocks for these projects.
Leo is survived by his daughter-in-law, Lucy Higgins and grandson, James, of Bangor; son, Barry Higgins and fiancée, Nancy Miller, of Connecticut and grandchildren, Nick, Carissa, David, Keri, Angela and Sara; son, Richard Higgins and his wife, Gale, of Pittsburg, Calif., and granddaughter, Leanna; daughter, Irene Higgins of Bradley; daughter, Cynthia Prescott and her husband, David, of Newburgh and granddaughters, Theresa and Jaime; daughter, Cheryl Higgins of South Portland; daughter, Patricia Delong and her husband, Ross, of Orrington and grandchildren, Christie, Brad and Adam; daughter, Tammie Higgins of Portland; son, Mark Higgins and his wife, Pauline, of Bangor and granddaughters, Ashley, Rachel and Madison; son, John Higgins and his wife, Kristy, of Glenburn and grandsons, J.J. and Wilson; son, Tim Higgins and his wife, Kristine, of Glenburn and granddaughters, Emily and Katherine; son, Peter Higgins and his fiancée, Denise D’Amboise, of Bangor
and granddaughter, Morgan; daughter, Jackie Ireland and her husband, Lew, of Brewer and grandchildren, Alexis and Garrett; 11 great-grandchildren; his sister, Virginia Winchester; and special friends, Tammie Thayer and Bob Cadorette. Leo was predeceased by his wife, Hilda M. Higgins; his oldest son, Leo J. Higgins Jr.; brothers, Thomas, Johnny, George and Richard Higgins; and his sisters, Mary Connors, Kay Brooks, Annie Henry and Alma Mourkas. The family would like to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, and the medical and nursing staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center for the excellent, kind and compassionate care provided to our Dad, Leo.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-8 p.m. Monday, May 21, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at St. John Catholic Church after the interment. Those who wish to remember Leo in a special way may make gifts to the Leo J. Higgins Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Mel MacKay, John Bapst Memorial High School, 100 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.

David R. Higgins Sr., 85, war veteran, lobsterman

KITTERY — David R. Higgins Sr., who was a career lobsterman and fisherman, died Friday at the age of 85.

He was born in York, attended local schools and served in the U.S. Army after graduation.

During his time in the service, Mr. Higgins fought in World War II.

He was a sergeant when he was discharged and he later became a member of the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Returning to Maine, he took to the coast and the ocean. His son Samuel Higgins said he sometimes went out with his father deep-sea fishing for haddock, pollock, cod and flounder, and caught the occasional shark or two.

"I used to go out with him all the time when I went over to his house for the summer," his son said. "Went out with him every day when he went lobstering."

Some of Mr. Higgins' hobbies revolved around his occupation.

Over the years, he built three or four skiffs, his son said, and partially built a lobster boat. He also built his own traps, first out of wood and later out of metal, Samuel Higgins said.

"He loved the wooden ones better," his son said.

Mr. Higgins was remembered Wednesday as humorous.

When he wasn't out on the ocean or building boats and lobster traps, Mr. Higgins visited various yard sales. His son said he would return home with "all kinds of stuff," ranging from stuffed animals to decorative lamps.

"Anything he could get his hands on," he said. "One item that he got was a 'Lord of the Rings' thing. The creature Gollum."

He gave that yard-sale find to his son, who still has it.

Mr. Higgins lived through the deaths of his parents, Wilbur and Alice Higgins, his wives, Janet (Brown) Higgins and Kay (Bronski) Higgins, and son, David R. Higgins Jr.

Surviving him are his four children, Bessie Higgins, Frances Higgins of Vermont, Michael Higgins of Sanford and Samuel Higgins of Acton, as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandsons, his five sisters and a brother.

The family is planning a graveside service for Mr. Higgins for sometime in the spring.

Nancy Choroszy moved into a home in Saco, Maine, where she found an old Higgins family Bible with the data genealogists consider a bonanza.

She thought this Bible was left by a former resident of the house, an old Henry Higgins believed to have died between 1945 and 1955. The births, marriages and deaths begin in the 1700s and the last entry is dated in 1847. Knowing that family researchers should have access to these genealogy records, Nancy forwarded them to Kenneth R. Brown, a Boston genealogist. He then arranged for their publication in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register.

Sewall Family Connection
Phebe Higgins (1810-1851) was the third wife of Dumner/Dummer Sewall, a descendant of Henry Sewall (1614-1700) of Coventry, England and Newbury, Massachusetts, who married Jane Dummer (1628-1700) at Newbury in 1646.

Dumner/Dummer Sewall (1783-1848) was the first white child born in Chesterville, Maine, a son of Dummer and Jenny (Dunning) Sewall, who were pioneers in Franklin Co., Maine.

Some interesting anecdotes about the elder Dummer Sewall can be found on the excellent Sewall website, which lists additional resources in its documentary citations.

These are the old Higgins family Bible entries:

H. L. HIGGINS

As the middleman between those who fish and those who catch them, H. L. Higgins, at Tillson's Wharf, has immense transactions to attend to, and is the leading retail fish jobber in our city, and among the foremost in the State of Maine. Everything that floats in these waters is handled by Mr. Higgins, who deals extensively in all specimens of the finny tribe, handles shell fish in and out of the shell, pickled goods, and in season has especially large dealings in scallops and clams he supplies the Eastern Steamship Co. with these commodities, the local hotels and markets, as well as shipping to other points, his ware house occupying space of 6,000 square feet, and 8 people being employed. This concern, for 20 years known as Stephen Chase & Co., came under the enterprising proprietorship of Mr. Higgins in 1900. Mr. Higgins was born and educated in Bar Harbor, and was in this same business there 3 years, being one of the most able men in this line in the State. Mr. Higgins has been a member of the city council and is now serving as alderman, being a citizen of public spirit as well as a commercial man of integrity.

I am searching for Orient C. Higgins b. 10-3-1854 on Mt. Desert Island, Hancock Co., Maine, the son of Zacheus Higgins 3rd and Martha Stanwood Higgins. He was my grandfather's brother. The siblings were: Humphrey S., William S., Nathan, Simon, Elvira and Elmina (twins),

Mercy H., Isaac C. George F. A., Orient (the one for whom I am searching), Mary Ella, and Warren.

Humphrey, William, Nathan, and Simon were all veterans of the Civil War.

He is NOT the Orient C. Higgins who was a physician in California, that one was born at Ellsworth, Hancock Co., Maine to Josiah Higgins.

Any information would be appreciated, especially date and place of death, place of burial, and wife and children, if any.

Also, is anyone knows where Zacheus 3rd and Martha are buried, and Martha's date of birth, I would like to have that information.

Thank you.

- Higgins' from Ireland to Maine -
I am looking for the family history of my grandfather, John Higgins, born on 6/28/1879 in Ireland. His parents were listed as Michael Higgins and Mary McGrath on his death certificate. He immigrated to the United States in 1900 and became a naturalized citizen in 1906. He was listed on the 1920 US census as a blacksmith living in Milo Maine. I am seeking the family he left behind in Ireland. Any help in tracing his Irish lineage is appreciated.

Email John Higgins at Higgins3214 AT aol.com.

-Webmaster's Findings-

His World War 1 Registration card states he was born July 28,1879 and that he was an employee of The Bangor & Aroosstock Railroad as a Blacksmith as of the registration date of September 12,1918.
Personal description is noted as Tall, Medium build, Blue Eyes Brown Hair.
It also noted he is a Naturalized Citizen.

John D. Higgins
Source: Biographical Review Cumberland County, Maine 1896

John D Higgins, a successful farmer of the town of Standish, Me., was born January 23, 1826, on the homestead where he now resides. He is a representative of the third generation of his family in Cumberland County, his father, Enoch F Higgins, having been a son of Joseph Higgins, who was born in Eastham, Mass., and from there removed to Maine, taking up land in the town of Gorham.

Grandfather Higgins cleared and improved a large farm, and also built many houses. He was very influential in aiding the development of his adopted town, but was never an officeholder. He was a Whig in politics. In his later years he followed the sea as captain of a trading-vessel, running from Portland to the West Indies. In 1804 he made his last trip, being lost on the voyage. He married Mercy Cook, of Eastham, who long survived him, attaining the venerable age of eighty-nine years. She was a sincere member of the Methodist church. Ten children were born to them, Enoch F. being the fourth in order.

Enoch F Higgins was born at the home of his parents in Gorham in September, 1790, and was there bred to manhood. On attaining his majority he removed to Standish, and here opened a store for general merchandise. He likewise bought one hundred acres of land, about two-thirds of which he placed under cultivation, turning his attention during the latter part of his life to agricultural pursuits. Like his father, a Whig in politics, he was an active and influential member of his party. He was a man of keen intellect, possessing good business ability, and served for many years as one of the Selectmen of Standish. He was a member of the Congregational church, in which he held the office of Deacon for three years. Deacon Higgins married Miriam Dean, a daughter of John Dean; of this town; and they became the parents of four children, the following being a brief record, of the three daughters, sisters of Mr. John D. Higgins, the leading subject of the present sketch : Harriet M., who died in 1869, married Horatio J. Swazey, by whom she had six children, four of whom are living - Henry W., Charles F., John H., and George R.; Mary, who married Daniel Tyler, died in 1888; Caroline is the wife of Professor Lucian M. Hunt, of whom a sketch may be found elsewhere in this volume.

John D. Higgins completed his education at the Limerick Academy, and has since given his attention to farming, making his home on the parental estate as above noted. He has one hundred and twenty-five acres of choice land, which he manages profitably, raising the crops common to this section of the country. Mr. Higgins is held in high regard as a man of strict integrity and well-known ability, and is numbered among the valued citizens of his native town, which he has served as Treasurer and Selectman. Socially, he is prominent in several organizations, being a member of Standish Lodge, No. 7, A. F. & A. M., of this town; of the Standish Grange, Patrons of Husbandry; and of Highland Lodge, No. 355, Good Templars. Religiously, he is a Congregationalist.

Mr. Higgins married Marcia A. Paine, daughter of William Paine, of Standish, and six children have been born of their union, five of whom are living; namely, Helen Maria (Higgins), Miriam Dean (Higgins), Margaret Paine (Higgins), Carrie A. (Higgins), and Ethel Louise (Higgins)

John L. Higgins, a native of Gorham, born November 18,  1829, was left an orphan when but six months old, and was adopted by his uncle, Saul C. Higgins . The latter was a son of Joseph and Mercy (Cook) Higgins.
Joseph Higgins was born March 22, 1750, at Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he lived until after his marriage. Removing then to this county, he took up one hundred acres of land still in its virginal wildness, and from it redeemed a farm. He was also a follower of the sea, being Captain of a trading-vessel sailing between Portland and the West Indies. On June 27, 1804, he left Portland in command of the sloop "Amicitia," bound for Guadeloupe with a cargo of house frames, lumber, and general freight; and neither he, the vessel, nor any of the crew were ever again heard of. Of the ten children born to him and his wife, Saul C. (Higgins) was the youngest.

Saul C Higgins, born on the old homestead in Gorham, May 11, 1794, was a much beloved and highly esteemed citizen of this town. After living for more than a century, he died February 16, 1895. He was in the War of 1812, being then but eighteen years of age. He enlisted in 1814 in the company of his brother, Captain Barnabas Higgins, of the Massachusetts militia, as Maine then formed a part of the old Bay State. He was never in active service, however, as the war closed fourteen days after his company was ordered to Portland. He drew a pension, and his name is entered on the Register of Membership of the General Society of the War of 1812. A graduate of Gorham Academy, he was finely educated for his day, and subsequently taught school twenty-seven years, seventeen of which were spent in his own district. He was an industrious, hard-working man and a prominent citizen of the place. He served the town for several years as superintendent of schools. He was temperate in his habits, never using tobacco in any form. He lived to be more than one hundred years of age, retaining his faculties to a remarkable degree. His wife, whose maiden name was Fanny Blake, was born December 9, 1792, and died June 22, 1877. They had no children of their own, but were much attached to their adopted son. Both were members of the Methodist church, and in politics he was a sound Democrat.

John L Higgins acquired a good common school education. At the age of eighteen years he went West, where he resided until 1877. Returning then to the scenes of his boyhood, he settled on the old homestead, which he has since managed. In politics he is identified with the Democratic party, and his religious belief is that of the Universalists. He is a Knight of Pythias, being the oldest Knight in Maine, having membership in Dirigo Lodge, No. 21, of Gorham.

On June 15, 1850, Mr. Higgins was united in marriage with Sarah A. (Warren), daughter of William Warren, of Gorham, she being the fourth of a family of six children. Of the four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Higgins, but one is now living, namely: Fanny L. (Higgins), born in Chicago, III., September 23, 1871, residing with her parents.
