HIGGINS (Andrew) CEMETERY Location: From the mouth of Prices Creek, go 3.1 mile; just before the A.O. England, General Merchandise (The Old Red Store) turn left into a gravel driveway between a barn and white house. Walk up and around the hill a short distance to the cemetery. The cemetery is visible from the road. Condition: Good

Wyman G. Higgins - May 17, 1924 - October 24, 2010 

Wyman Garnet Higgins, 86, of the Pensacola community, died on Sunday, October 24, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Oteen following a brief illness.

The son of the late Betis Ector Higgins and Cleo Parrott Higgins of Horton Creek, he was born on May 17, 1924 and grew up in the Prices Creek area of Yancey County.

Wyman was a retired produce contractor with Schmieding Produce of Springdale, Arkansas. He spent his retirement years in Pensacola enjoying family, playing pool with his buddies at Brook Wilson�s store, and cutting firewood in the woods surrounding his home.

A combat veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Infantry, 163rd Texas Division, in France, Italy, Germany and North Africa. He was awarded the Purple Heart and many other medals for his brave service to his country.

In addition to his parents, his brother, Marvin Higgins, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Wilson Higgins of Pensacola, and six children: Jody Higgins of Burnsville; David Higgins of Springdale, Ark; Rhonda Higgins of Burnsville; Clarissa �Cheech� Stewart of Spruce Pine; Sharon Adkins of Burnsville; and Chrys Griffith of Burnsville; three brothers, Zack of Harrisville, Michigan; Arby of Asheville, and Donald of Mars Hill; and two sisters, June Ledford of Morganton and Hazel Bradley;11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

His family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 27, from 6 � 8 p.m. at Yancey Funeral services, which is assisting the family. Military graveside services will be held in the Eddie McMahan Cemetery in Low Gap on Thursday at 2 p.m. and presided over by DAV Chaplin Walter Savage and the DAV Honor Guard Burial Detail.

In Wyman�s memory, donations can be made to the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter 57 of Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 868, Burnsville, NC 28714 to help provide services to his fellow local veterans.

HIGGINS CEMETERY: Location: About 5 miles down Cane River on 19-W North, turn onto road # 1383 (Hog Branch) and go .5 miles, turn left on gravel road that leads to the Higgins Freewill Baptist Church. Follow this road around behind the church and to the top of
the hill to cemetery. Condition: Well kept
