* Susannah's parents remain a mystery. In 1850, Susannah R. Mertz, age 17, is living in Upper Nazereth, Northampton Co. Pa with 72 year old farmer John Dech and his 68 year old wife Susannah. Given the middle initial, age, and the fact that no other Susannah Mertz lives anywhere in the area anywhere near that age, this is probably the right person. In 1840, there is a Jacob Mertz and a John Mertz living in Northampton Co., both with daughters age 5-10. Neither of them appears to be living in Pennsylvania in 1850. Either could possibly be Susannah's father. Another possibility is that her parents died even earlier. In 1840, John Dech is listed as living with two young females, one between 5-10 and the other 10-15. The younger could be Susannah.
