New Boston Cemetery
-----------------------

New Boston Cemetery is shown on Map 6 on the Cemeteries Page. It is located in Section 32 of New Boston Township, east of New Boston Town {Township Map} We would be most interested in posting any photos that descendants take while visiting. The Strawhacker photo below is courtesy of Bill Strawhacker {Strawhacker Page}. The Sloan photos are courtesy Clorita Sloan Kenny {Sloan Page}. There are also many photos on the Findagrave site linked above and if you have photos they should definitely be posted there as well. Jamie Paul has posted photos of the tombstones of the Dr. Thomas Willits family on Findagrave site.

There is an index of tombstones prepared by the William Dennison Chapter of the DAR in Mercer County on the IlGenWeb Site. You can search by surname or find the New Boston Cemetery in Volume 2 of the books. If you find your person (s) listed in the index send the names and volume and page number to Nadine Holder (email on the About Us Page) and she will do a library lookup for what is listed on the tombstone.

Following is a list of previous lookups done.

She is mentioned in the 1882 History of Mercer County as still alive and living in New Boston, age 80 but no tombstone was found for her in the cemetery walkdown in 1960. She might have gone to live with or visit a child who didn't live in Mercer when she died so may not be buried there.

There were a lot of errors in the transcriptions of these tombstones but in the 1870 census John, son of John and Eliza McQuaid, was 8 years old so that looks right and William was 16 so suspect the 60 is wrong and should be 16.

There is a group of seven civil war markers including Charles Fortner Co G 27th Ill Infantry (no dates on any of them) so don't know what to make of this entry. The History of Mercer County 1882 shows a Gilbert Fortner of Co G 27th Regiment listed on the soldier's monument in Aledo having died in the Civil War. In the Adjutant General's Report of Illinois and in Co G 27th Illinois: William Fortner, died in camp at Big Springs July 2, 1863; Charles Fortner Discharged Jan 8, 1863, disabled; and Gilbert Fortner discharged Jan 30, 1862, disabled (so not sure why he wound up on the monument unless he died on the way home). Three brothers? The only one in Mercer County in 1860 was Gilbert who was age 18, working as a laborer, New Boston Township, born Iowa. Charles Fortner of Co G 27th Ill Inf filed for a pension Jul 5 1864 from Iowa application #517077, pension #680362
