From Melanie Young - "1807 B-17 Williamsburg. Feriby BARRENEU
(by x) of Williamsburg District for Love and Affection to Martha
GREAR (a cow and a calf) and to Samuel DOWNING, Micajah DOWNING,
and George DOWNING (her right and title of dower in 300 acres in
possession of Isaac BARRENEU) They to support her during her
lifetime. Wit: Thos. McCREA, Jr., James CAMPBELL."
"Charles Hurt was a witness to a deed wherein on 9-24-1800,
Richard Walker conveyed to Macon Hurt of Lunenburg County, 543
acres of land on the Meherrin River and Muddy Fork in the
southern part of Lunenburg County. (Deed Book 18, page 250,
Lunenburg County, Va.) [Note by O. H.: Charles and Macon Hurt
were brothers, Charles' name was Charles S. Hurt. He was born
7-28-1775 and died 10-2-1846 in Putnam County, Ga., where he
moved before 2-22-1802, on which date he married Sarah Hurt,
daughter of William Hurt who was a son of Joel Hurt of Halifax
County, N.C. We know that Charles married Sarah after he had
gone to Georgia because Sarah lived there and never lived in
Lunenburg County."
"Baldwin County, Ga. Charles Hurt was in the Tax Return Book of
Baldwin County, Ga. for the year 1807 for 9 slaves and 200 acres
of land in Baldwin County, Ga. on Little River and the record
shows that land was granted direct to himself. (Page 5, 2nd
District in Capt. Stephens Dist.). [Note by O. H.: This land
was on the north side of Little River and was in Putnam County,
Ga. after that county was created in 1807. The name of Charles
Hurt was Charles S. Hurt. I believe that his father and mother
were Zacheus Hurt, Sr. and Judith Sallard Hurt. It is just
possible that Charles was named for Judith's father Charles
Sallard and that his full name may have been Charles Sallard
Hurt.}."
