My preferences for Adobe Acrobat for the method of distributing my Genealogy Book are simple--I like the fact that the Electronic Book can be made non-printable and non-editable. Current practices among genealogists of emailing GEDCOM files is literally "GIVING" your information away lock stock and barrel to another person. With Acrobat I have designed two type of electronic books:
The first PDF Book (file) for emailing or downloading was designed for on-screen viewing (extra large fonts). This version of the book is non-editable and non-printable, but the hyperlinks make it work just like a real book chapter to chapter. Another genealogist simply cannot begin "using" your information (*like in a gecom) as if it were theirs.They CAN read and study your information all they want!
The second manner is an Electronic PDF book that is an exact duplicate of the 81/2 by 11 printed book. This version is still hyperlinked to work like a book but allows you the option of allowing the person to download the file to a folder on their computer and you may (or may not) allow this person to print the book on his/her own computer.You have the option of selling your book the person wanting to print on their own computer. This allows an actual reprint of the original document. This also allows me to determine a selling price for persons who want to print their own copies. I can charge less for my genealogy book because I have not incurred any printing costs---the end user is paying for his own printing! So it costs less for them to buy my book!
