Note: legalaliennette Blog: The Philosopher of Music; ..concert pianist and holocaust survivor Alice Herz-Sommer has never lost her passion for music. In fact, she owes her life to it.. Alice Herz-Sommer has seen the worst life has to offer, having survived the holocaust and owing it to the talent she’s been blessed with. She was a world famous pianist, recognised amongst musicians like Gustav (see Mahler family) *geni “difficult character”, Antonín Dvořák, Josef Suk, and Vítězslav Novák, some of whom used to visit her childhood home in Prague, alongside intellectuals like Franz (see Kafka family) “I played especially Czech music, and they were thankful for what I did. Everywhere in the world they played Czech music. People loved it.”..She started playing when she was five. “My eldest sister was an excellent pianist. She was teaching me until my 16th birthday. Then I studied with a pupil of Franz Liszt.”Most of Alice’s family were musicians. “We didn’t speak about anything else,” she recalled. “Every evening we went to a concert with my mother. I heard the greatest pianists.”.. In 1943, Alice was sent with her husband and 6-year-old son to Theresienstadt (Terezín) concentration camp, a “show-camp” made for visitors from the Red Cross, simulating a rich cultural life amongst the inmates. “We had to work all day. I only played when I had a concert. Music is so wonderful, it brings you into another world. You are not anymore here.”.. OR on wikipedia ..Herz-Sommer swam daily until the age of 97. At 104, Herz-Sommer published a bestselling book "A Garden of Eden in Hell" (on Amazon) recalling the events of the concentration camps. In 2010, a television programme was aired on BBC4 to recognise her life story. Herz-Sommer attributes her longevity to her optimism..
Note: Raphael Sommer scholarship, cello.org, panmacmillan The Story of a Miracle’ by Raphael Sommer, YouTube Rachmaninov Cello Sonata 3rd movt - Raphael Sommer, telegraph, guardian obituary "I have very good memories of that place, thanks to my mother," said the cellist Raphael Sommer, speaking on BBC Radio 3 about the two years he spent as a child in the Nazi concentration camp at Terezin, 35 miles outside Prague. "She did everything to hide all the atrocities from me, and to create a kind of normality." In Terezin, Raphael, who has died of an aneurysm of the aorta aged 64, turned the pages at every weekly concert his mother, Alice Hertz Sommer, a Czech concert pianist, was forced to perform, in addition to forced labour. He also performed the role of the sparrow in the camp production of Hans Krása's fable about tyranny, Brundibar. Years later, he conducted many memorable performances of the opera. Raphael Sommer, who had been born in Prague, was one of only a handful of children to survive Terezín. He was sent to the camp with his parents in July 1943; a year later, his father, Leopold, was moved to Dachau, where he died six weeks before it was liberated. Mother and son were billeted in a narrow room with 16 other inmates, but fortunately remained together. After the war, they reached Israel, where Alice became a teacher and Raphael a pupil at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem. His first instrument was, reluctantly, the piano until, at the age of 11, he embarked on a happy and enduring relationship with the cello.. A succession of prizes and outstanding debut performances.. In 1967, a parallel career as a highly respected teacher began when Raphael took over the cello department of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. In 1989, he became professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, in London, as well as a judge of international competitions..
