of NY., VA., MO., CA. of America~1991
My Great-Grear-Grandfather James,3 JAYNE was the first born of Henry,2 JAYNE and wife Abigail WHEELER, near Goshen, Orange County, New York, on the 14th. of March 1774. A few days [9 ] later on March 23rd, 1774 Patrick HENRY addressed the revolutionary convention in Richmond, Va., with the famous exclamation: " Give me liberty or give me death!"
James,3 JAYNE was the oldest of the eleven children, and at the age of 9 years (1783) his family moved from Orange Co., NY. to Washington Co. Virginia, where he was raised to manhood.

     COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA
The colonization of the American continent in modern times began with the arrival of three boatloads of English immigrants in May, 1607 on the northeast shore of James River in the present state of Virginia. The English originally applied the name "Virginia" in honor of Elizabeth I, the virgin Queen, to all of North America not controlled by the Spanish or the French. One of the leaders was Captain John Smith, a daring adventurous fellow with an inquisitive mind who had been in many tight situations on the outskirts of civilization. With a score of companions, he sailed into several of the many bays and river openings along the zigzagging east coast, and thus became acquainted with the lay of the land. Having done nothing to provide food for that winter of 1607, more than half of the colony succumbed from illness and lack of nourishing food.
The next summer of 1608 brought them new supplies from England and 120 more immigrants. In the fall of 1608 the colony of 130 or 140 persons was joined by 70 more immigrants with supplies in the third expedition from England. At the beginning of the next winter in 1609 the colony consisted of 490 persons. When the spring of 1610 arrived there were only 60 persons left in the colony. Determined to return to England, the remaining group embarked on a ship leaving out of the mouth of the James River, when Virginia bound ships under the command of Lord Delaware came into sight. Against their own judgment, the disgruntled colonist were persuaded to return to their abandoned homes in Virginia. Early in 1610 more food and additional colonists arrived from England. Virginia became a royal colony in 1624. From then until 1776, when it announced its independence from England, it was in almost constant trouble with the Crown or its representatives. Mainly, the colonist objected to the arbitrary action of the colony officials and their ruthless demands.
Every month in the year, with the exception of the winter months, boatloads of new immigrants arrived. More and more settlements were established, some as far as the Potomac River. By 1700 their were more than 80,000 persons living in the Tidewater region of Virginia. Twenty thousand more had come by 1717. During the next 37 years, the population increased by almost two hundred per cent, reaching 284,000 by 1754.

The story goes that my Great-Grandfather, 3rd son J. Wheeler JAYNE, built his first home on the property just south of his father James,3 JAYNE's farm house, he had married a Tennessee girl by the name of "Eliza" M. DeVAULT, and along with their 1st John C. JAYNE who was only 3 yrs. old all worked on the original JAYNE farm.

My Great-Great-Grandfather James,3 JAYNE died on the 24th of May 1860, at the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 10 days, in Jonesville, Lee Co., Va., he was Buried in the Clark-Jayne Cemetery, a Headstone marks his grave. James,3 JAYNE was a enterprising man, obtained land by purchase and grant, and within a few years he owned most of the land lying on Wallens Creek in Lee County west of Hunter's Gap for a few miles. He continued to add to his holdings, and he deeded most of his land to his children, sons and son-in-laws, upon their marriages or before on which to establish homes. The Wallens Creek area was more or less a JAYNE Settlement for several years.
James,3 JAYNE was a well-known citizen of the county, active in the civic and political life of the community. He engaged in farming, as all pioneers of that day, they had well stocked storehouses for comfortable living, and their houses were as the best in the county.
James,3 JAYNE provided well for his large and growing family. All their houses were constructed of hewed logs as were the majority of the homes of the pioneers of Lee County. James,3 JAYNE'S original 1804 home, stood near the site where Dr. Nat EWING'S farm now stands (1975) and the Clark-Jayne Family Cemetery lies a short distance east of Nat's house. This is where James,3 JAYNE and Wife Hannah (Sims), along with several members of their family are buried.
