William Benjamin BAKER100 was born on 22 July 1840 in Harford Co., Maryland.70,100 He died in May 1911 at the age of 70 in Harford Co., Maryland.70,100 DEATH CLAIMS HON. W. B. BAKER
Harford's "Great Old Man," Dies at His Home in Aberdeen.
The whole community of Harford county was shocked to learn on Wednesday morning that Hon. William B. Baker, of Aberdeen, was dead. While his demise was looked for, yet when the end came it was received with regret by an all loving people.
Mr. Baker's death was due to a paralytic stroke, sustained on Sunday evening. He was in the bathroom at his home, when attacked, and he fell to the floor. In falling he struck his head against the bathtub and received an ugly scalp wound. Members of his family rushed to the room, and found him in an unconscious condition. Physicians were summoned, but he never regained consciousness, and on Wednesday morning, came the end of a useful life.
Mr. Baker was one of the most prominent men of Harford county, as well as of the State of Maryland. He was a republican in politics, and had taken an active parting republican politics since 1875, when he was a candidate for the House of Delegates, and was defeated by Gen. Murray Vandiver.
He represented the Second Maryland Congressional District for three terms in Congress, and was the father of the rural mail delivery. When the matter of rural mail delivery was spoken of in Congress, there were none willing to assume the responsibility, for it was thought rural merchants who acted as postmasters would set up an angry protest. Mr. Baker, however, was willing for the experiment to be made in his district, and the first rural route of the country was started in Carroll county, from Westminster post office.
Mr. Baker also represented Harford county two terms in the Maryland State Senate, and was a candidate two years ago for the same honors, but was defeated by Hon. Charles A. Andrew, of Conowingo, the present State Senator.
Mr. Baker was the oldest of five sons of the late George W. Baker. One brother, George A. Baker, died in Havre de Grace about three years ago. The other brothers are Messrs. Charles W. Baker, John H. Baker and James B. Baker, all of Aberdeen, wealthy and influential business men. There are three sisters living, Mrs. Sarah Carty, the oldest of the family; Mrs. J. Wesley Harward, of near Bel Air; Mrs. H. Clay Courtney, of Carsins, and one deceased, Mrs. Asel Tollinger, of Lapidum.
In 1868 he married Miss Olivia Wells, of Aberdeen, who lived only a little more than one year. In 1872 he was married again, Miss Mary C. Hollis, of Bush Chapel neighborhood, being his bride.
