Hull Woman's Tragic death From a local paper (?HDM) for Tuesday, 10th April 1906, page 6 - Mr Luke White MP., the East Riding Coroner, held an inquest on Monday touching the death of Annie E Fargus, a single woman, aged 44, of 50 Albany Street, Hull, She was found dead in bed at 34 St George's Avenue, Bridlington, She came to Bridlington a few days ago to prepare the house for the summer season

Miss Carrie Chapman deposed that she last saw the deceased alive at 10 o'clock on Saturday night and found her dead in bed the following morning. She immediately summoned medical assistance.

Mr W Fargus, brother of the deceased, gave evidence to the effect that the deceased suffered from pains in the head.

Dr Colman stated that he found a cup and a medicine bottle, which had contained liniment, on a chair near the bed. Death was due to poison. There was no sign that the liniment had been used for outward application.I suspect that the liniment would have contained Oil of Wintergreen.

A juror said that he had known the deceased for several years and had found her cheerful and of a kind disposition.

The Jury returned a verdict that death was due to poison, self-administered, but that there was no evidence to show whether the deceased took the poison by mistake.

Her will was probated on 12 May 1906 at York. She left £112.

F. Emily FARGUS b. 28 MAY 1868, 38 Hessle Road, Hull, ERY, m. 11 JUN 1889, in All Saints, Hull, ERY, Thomas Augustus GILLETT, b. 21 SEP 1862, Parkwood Springs, Brightside, Sheffield, (son of Richard GILLETT and Annie SMITH) Master Hatter, d. 13 JUN 1952, 16 Park Ave., Hull, ERY. Emily died 13 JUL 1906, 34 St George's Ave, Bridlington, ERY, buried: Western Cemetary, Hull, ERY. She was born at 61 Hopwood St. Hull. Died at 34 St Georges Ave, Bridlington, of Malignant disease of the uterus and radium exhaustion. Mother always understood that she died in childbirth, and the baby also died. Note that this address is the same as the one given on her mother's death certificate. In Western cemetary records: 254-23833. Compartment no. 98, grave 9675. The entry in the register says she died at 54 Berkely Street, Bridlington of Cancer. I think they have put the wrong address as her husband was the informer, living at 54 Berkely St. HULL. Officiating minister was ABJ Lillington. This information was obtained from m/fs at Hull record office.

Presumably she was buried in the same grave as Thomas Gillett. The grave stone was not there when I visited the cemetary in 1996. The grave is under a small tree which must have broken it.

1. Beatrice Annie GILLETT b. 19 JUN 1890, Myton District, Hull, ERY, Clerk with Inland Revenue, d. 19 NOV 1976, Avenue Hosp.,Bridlington, ERY. Born at 38 Hessle Road, Hull, ERY. Lived at 24 St Martins Grove. According to Mother, she was 'thrown out' of the house by her step-mother, when she was about 29, as she hadn't married. I knew her better in her later years when she was regarded as a bit of a character. Left all her money to the RSPB and other charities. Travelled a lot. Took 1lb of bird-seed to Venice for the pigeons to save money - quite a character!

2. Richard Owen GILLETT b. 01 JUN 1893, , Cottingham, ERY, d. 23 MAR 1894, , , Hull, ERY, buried: Western Cemetary, Hull, ERY. Born at 22 Salisbury Gardens, Cottingham, Hull. Died at 38 Hessle Road, Hull. ERY, 'of fits' according to Mother. As the Death Certificate shows that he died from pneumonia of two day's duration, the fits would almost certainly have been due to fever. St Cath. Index gives Sculcoates as registration district.

3. Enid May GILLETT b. 07 SEP 1903, W Sculcoates, Hull, ERY, m. 24 MAY 1930, in St Augustine's, Hull, ERY, Donald Rahr TRENBATH, b. 29 JUN 1898, Ashlee, Vicarage Lane, Bowden, CHS, (son of Arthur Herbert TRENBATH and Helena Amelia RAHR) Bank Manager, d. 8 APR 1988, , Highcliffe, DOR, buried: Crematorium, , Bournemouth, DOR. Enid died 23 JUL 1990, General Hospital, Southampton, HAM, buried: Crematorium, , Southampton, HAM. Born at 54 Berkeley St. Hull. Had training on a farm about 1923 and then as a hairdresser, but never earned her living. Enthusiastic photographer, needle- woman, nature-lover, particularly butterflies and moths. Enjoyed painting in later years. Enjoyed rambling and travelling, particularly in the thirties, when she and Don went to Switzerland and Austria. They took Brian and me in 1948 for our first overseas holiday. Enid worked with SSAFA for over 25 years as a voluntary helper and interviewer. Donald: His godparents were Walter and Hilda Ormerod, parents of his cousin, Leslie (Bai) Talented gardener and maker of crazy paving paths, rockeries and garden ponds!

Had a governess until he was nine years old, then went to Sandringham House School, Alexandra Road, Southport, followed by Bickerton House, Birkdale.

In 1913 he left school and went to Dresden, Germany, to learn German, living with a Doctor and his family. He was there for under a year, when war broke out and he managed to get out of Germany as a schoolboy, although he was just over 16. He remembered a long train journey, and how singing broke out, spreading along the train, when they crossed the ?Dutch border and knew they were safe. When he returned home he wrote an article for the Southport Visitor, which I haven't been able to trace.

He then worked at the National Provincial Bank in Victoria Street, Liverpool, and also at Whitechapel, Liverpool.

He joined up under the Derby Scheme, which meant that he could be called up when he was needed.

RAMC no 118718. The m/f records of WW1 medals at PRO Kew, say he was a private (RAMC/101 B111 page 8661). It says he was awarded the British and Victory medals, but I know that there were three all together. The medals were lost in the burglary at Canterbury. The reference number (WO329/2109) given in the index appears to be wrong - it was suggested that I try WO329/2099, which would be the next in sequence on the page.

His wartime experiences are recorded in his diary (see my Trenbath Site). He returned to England on the Orotavia, which docked at Southampton in February 1920, and returned to the Whitechapel branch and then the Victoria Street, where there were 6 GIRLS - a completely novel experience.

In 1926 he moved to Leicester. In 1929 he met Enid on holiday at Smedley's Hydro, Matlock Spa. They married in 1930, and honeymooned at Rosecliffe Court, (later a Carnation farm) ,? Chine, Isle of Wight. Mother remembers taking a huge trunk with her, which she believes contained all her possessions for their house in Leicester. The honeymoon was rather embarassing, as they were the only guests at this huge hotel, and they heard the maids calling from downstairs; 'The two's in', each time they returned!

Dad had been working at Gallow Tree Road, off Belgrave Road, in Leicester, for the past year or two, I believe. I remember him setting off to cycle across the centre of Leicester to work every morning, although this must have been in the war, as we had an Austin 7 just before the war. They lived at Ivanhoe, Dovedale Road, until about 1937, then 82 Holmfield Road, Evington, until 1942, when we moved north to Boston Spa in Yorkshire, where he was appointed Manager of the village branch of the National Provincial Bank.

During the was he joined the ARP - I think it was called St Michael's branch. He had a large photograph of the group wh. must have been thrown away when they were at Barton on Sea - I always regret not asking if I could have it.

We had stirrup pump practices in the garden of the house down the road on the corner of Kimberley Road.

In 1942 the family rented a wing of Boston Lodge, the former 'seat' of the Vincent family who, I believe were well-known naturalists in the nineteenth century. We then moved to 17 Woodlands Drive, Harrogate.

In about 1958 he bought Larchfield, Abbey Road, Knaresborough, and when he retired in 1963 they moved to 'Erica',Danes Close, Barton on Sea, Hants. Their last home was 24 Albany Close, Barton on Sea.

Like Enid, Don enjoyed rambling and photography. He was ?President of the Harrogate Photographic Club, and was secretary or treasurer for various societies relating to natural history and photography down the years. In Harrogate and Barton on Sea he was an active member of the Photographic Society and various others - Naturalists, ramblers, ornithologists or similar.

In Hampshire he was a member of the new Milton Camera Club, becoming one of the two Vice-Presidents some time before 1982. He was a member of the 'Mens' get together meeting section of the Community association in 1982/3.

1851 - At 33 Alfred Street, Hull, with family; See under Eleanor FARGUS.

1854 - Co-founder of Chambers and Fargus, Seed crushers, of Hull, with Henry Waudby Chambers. According to an article in HDM for 2 SEP 1991, when the milling operation was closed down, both were previously employed, 'for a number of years' by 'Hull's leading seed-crusher of the day, Mr Henry Hodge. Their first mill was on Oxford St. on a site previously occupied by tenements owned by the great hull reformer William Wilberforce.

A directory for 1879 described Chambers & Fargus as Seed Crusher, importers of Russian mats, bags etc - the office was 'off 5 High St'. The ware-house was at 23 North Walls and the mill was at Oxford Street Wharf, Wincomlee.

The residence of Henry Waudby Chambers in 1879 was on Watton Street.

By the turn of the century, demand for C & F products, which now included edible oils as well as oil cakes, saw other Hull mills being hired out by the firm, including the High Flags mill and refinery and the former Anglo-Egyptian works in Lime Street'.

A former employee recalls his 'vivid memories of the High Flags mill going up in smoke on a Sunday in August 70 years ago, but the high fire risk that accompanied the work is probably best remembered in the blaze that completely destroyed the C & F mill in Lime Street in 1937 [16 Feb]. One of the largest pre-war fires ever seen in the city, recovered seed and cake stocks smouldered for weeks afterwards and it took two years for the factory to be rebuilt'.

1856 - James was living in Hull, according to his marriage certificate.

M Halse, vicar of Holy Trinity, Bridlington, was the officiating clergyman. messrs H Moses & sons, of Hull, carried out the funeral arrangements.

Left £11,113-5s-2d in his will to James Owen FARGUS, merchant's clerk, and William and Edwin Owen Fargus, seed crushers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

James Fargus lived at Belvedere, Newlands Ave, Hull at one time, according to Ted Fargus. This was bombed in the war, just after his death. (Assuming that James is the Grandfather of Ted). It sounds as if it was a generation later.

Ted has a clock which is reputed to have been acquired in Wales. The clock is said to have been in the family since it was new and was made by a local clock repairer, David Jones...in about 1860. Ted's father said that they once owned land in Wales, but I can not get further back than James' birth in the Isle of Man about 1830.

According to 'Watchmakers and clock makers of the World', G H Baillie (NAG press 1963) there was a David Jones at Merthyr Tydvyl, 1763-1835, who made 'str. clocks. (not sure what this stands for). Also a David Jones of Caeo, Monmouth ca 1800, who made 'l.c.' clocks (presumably long carriage clocks) which sounds more promising. Note that Chepstow is in Monmouth, where 'Woodlands' was. See under Fargus of Woodlands in LG Pine's Landed Families book for 1928. According to the CRO at Cardiff,

There are many more David Jones in a similarly named book for 1976.

James Fargus was a registered owner of the "Swan", 95 423/3500 tons. Record is in shipping index at Hull CRO. William Gillett, hatter, (which one, I wonder?) also owned it.
