First Generation in South Australia

Thomas COULTER ( Reuben )

Thomas COULTER was christened on 5 June 1801 in Maidenstone, Kent, England.
Thomas was the 7th of 9 children for Reuben COULTER and Sarah HOWLETT.

Frances BARHAM was christened on 20 October 1795 in Nettlestead, Kent, England.
Frances was the 7th of 10 children for Alexander and Mary BARHAM.

Thomas COULTER married Frances BARHAM
on 9 October 1820
in East Malling, Kent, England.

Thomas was aged about 19 years. Frances was aged about 25 years.

Thomas and Frances had 9 children over the next 17 years.
All seem to have been born in Nettlestead, Kent, England.
The first 3 children died in infancy.

Thomas applied for free passage to South Australia.

Thomas and Frances COULTER, and their 6 children emigrated on 6 March 1840 on a sailing ship,
the Charles Kerr from Gravesend, London, England.

Thomas's older brother, John COULTER and his family were on board the same ship.

After a journey of 14 weeks and 5 days,
they all sailed into Port Adelaide, South Australia on 17 June 1840.
Thomas was aged about 39 years and Frances was about 45 years.
The approximate ages of their chilren were
Timothy 14 years, Thomas 12 years, Elizabeth 9 years, Mary 6 years, Lewis 5 years and Robert 3 years.

Frances "Fanny" COULTER nee BARHAM died on 28 August 1870 in Smithfield, South Australia.

Fanny was aged 77 years and living in Smithfield.
The cause of death was "General Delity old age".
Fanny's death was registered by Joseph BLAKE on 31 August 1870 in Smithfield.

Thomas COULTER died on 11 December 1878 in Lyndoch, South Australia.

Thomas was aged 74 years and living in Lyndoch, most probably with his daughter and her family.
The cause of death "Diarrhoea or Infeebled Constipation from Natural decay".
Thomas' death was registered by his daughter, Bess HAINES on 13 December 1878.
