Mr Soper, landlord of Angel Inn, Chard, S.set; before he'd retired to rest, Sun 1am (24 Mar 1827) the chimney caught fire. Flames raged with such fury, that if the wind had not shifted, a great part of the town was in danger of destruction. The Inn & 2 large houses were burned to the ground. In one, an uninsured ironmongers shop, it's owner Mr Denning just escaped in night clothes. Mr Soper had not time to save his money (upwards �100), much less his furniture. The premises was insured.
