: Sopers Farm; The southern end of Ensleigh down got attached to the Walcote manor, owned by Prior of Bath adjoining the city. It existed as a separate farm estate called �Soper�s�, presumably after a tenant, Thomas le Sopare whose house is mentioned in Priory papers 1296. John Soper, late Lord of Speckington, m.Catherine Lyte, dau of Thomas Lyte (the sister of John & Wm Lyte). Seems property (manor & farm of Northover, Sandhill & a tenement in Charlton) passed to wife's brother, William Lyte, to his son Edward Lyte. He lost the property by mortgage to Raymond of Chard, then to his son (Thomas Knowles?). The property was mentioned in a manorial court record, when owned by Thomas 26 Nov 1464 : ref DD\X\LY/3/24 [with 6 deaths between 1464 & Soper, a guess would be that Soper was around in late 1300's] www.a2a & Somerset Records DD\X\LY/3/24 : Catherine's parents[or brother?] had 'a fair house by the Court at Greenwich, late in possession of Henry Howard, Earl of Northamptonshire' p.35 Lytes pedigree [parent's 1579 brass above]
