Family History (Children follow) Jesse Clemens (also Clemons, Clemmens, Clemmons) was a native Missourian, born to Antony and Sarah Clemens in 1835. Antony, besides being a farmer in Andrew County, MO, was also a Methodist Episcopal minister, born in Kentucky about 1803. Sarah, his wife, was also born in 1803 but in Tennessee, according to later census records. While Sarah was illiterate and did not know where her parents ahd been born (for the question asked in the 1880 census), Antony said his parents were born in Ireland (father) and Kentucky (mother).

A more promenent Clemmons in Andrew County history was William Clemmons, born in Kentucky in 1825. A farmer, William was married to Sarah A. Hensley, a native Missourian born in 1830. Married in 1846, this couple had at least three children: Alice (b 1863), James (b 1866), and William (b 1870). William Sr. died in 1909. Both of his parents were said to have been born in Kentucky. Since Antony and Sarah had a son named William later (1864), perhaps Antony and William Sr. were related. MORTON in 1849; Jane (b 1829 MO); Henry (b 1831 MO) who married Martha MYERS in 1852; Charles (b 1833 MO); Jesse Green (b 1835 MO) who married Sarah E. GEORGE in 1864; Samuel (b 1837 MO); Melissa (b 1839 MO); Ruth (b 1841 MO); William (b 1845 MO) who married Elizabeth -?- by 1870; and Nancy (b 1847 MO). Hodges' Record Book for Andrew County MO states that the Savannah, MO newspaper listed Thomas and Henry Clemens as two of a party that left town for California or Oregon in 1852 after Henry's 13 of April marriage that year to Martha MYERS. In 1850 and 1860, Jesse lived at home with his parents in Platte township of Andrew County, MO according the the census records. (1850: #603-586; 1860: #726-714) In 1870 Jesse and Sarah, following their February 14, 1864 marriage, were living with the Antony Clemens' where Jesse was a farm laborer. Their three sons, William E. (b 1865 MO), George "Samuel" (b 1867 MO), and Edward L. (b October, 1869) were also living with their Clemens grandparents. The 1880 census shows Jesse and Sarah living next door to Antony and Sarah, still in Platte twp (#77-78). The elder Clemens' in turn lived next door to Sarah (GEORGE) CLEMENS's father, Enoch GEORGE (#79-80). Other children of Enoch's lived nearby: Isaac N. GEORGE and family, and Annaretta (GEORGE) ST. CLEAR and family. The next year in October of 1881, Sarah and Antony, married to each other at least 53 years, died within two days of each other. Sarah died October 16 and Antony died October 18. Both were buried in the old Hoover farm [now called the CLEMMENS Cemetery] in section 33 of Platte township. In 1883 (November 7), William E. CLEMMENS married Rachel HILLENBACK in Andrew County, MO (Circuit Court Book #1, p 153). George Samuel Clemmens married Mary G. WILSON on April 28, 1884 (Fuller's Book 1, p 420). They are said to have lived near or in Rosendale, MO (Andrew Co) after farming for several years west of their dad's land southwest of Whitesville, MO (Platte twp). Sam's father Jesse lived with him after Sarah died in 1919. Sam had 3 girls, Rachael (CLEMONS) ADAMS, Ruth CLEMENS (who never married), and Pearl (CLEMONS) FORDYCE GREENING (who is said to have had no children). The girls lived in Washington state, and Aubrey ADAMS Jr. worked for Boeing's blueprint department in Seattle at least during the 1970s. Rachael was divorced from Aubrey ADAMS Sr. after about 4 years of marriage in the 1920s. At some point, both moved to Westminster, CA where both remarried. Probably born in the 1920s, I haven't found Aubrey ADAMS Jr. in the SSDI list, and don't know where he lives. He is said to have had 6 children. Edward L. CLEMMENS married Ida TURNER on Christmas Day, 1889 (Book 2, p 137). An atlas of Andrew County for 1926 shows J. G. CLEMMONS owning 33.75 acres of land in section 33 of Platte township. This is also the location of the CLEMMENS burial place. When Sarah CLEMMONS died in 1919 after being paralyzed for some time, she was buried in McGLOTHLIN Cemetery in Benton township with others of her parents' family. Jesse CLEMMONS was also buried at McGLOTHLIN's. Even though no year of death appears on the tombstone he shares with his wife, his death certificate indicates that cemetery for his burial. In the 1970s, Clifford CLARK was living on the land Jessie had owned. CLEMMENS' Obituaries: Date of death: 18 Oct 1881 & 16 Oct 1881 Anthony Clemmens & Sarah (Jobe) Clemmens Source: Savannah Reporter, 28 Oct 1881 Anthony C. Clemmens and wife, old, well known citizens of Platte township, died at their residence last week. The wife went first, and although there was said to be no really perceptible ailment from which Clemmens was suffering, the bereaved husband took to his bed, and begged those in attendance not to bury his aged partner until he died, and then bury them both together. The wishes of the grief stricken old man were heeded to, and in three hours less than two days after the death of Mrs. Clemmens, her faithful partner through the long pilgrimage of her life, had joined her in death and together they will enter the portals of heaven, where they will receive the rewards of a well spent life. Jesse CLEMMENS' obituary: Date of death: 30 Apr 1929 Jesse G. Clemmens Source: unknown, May 1929 Jesse G. Clemmens, son of Rev. Anthony and Sara Job Clemmens, was born in Clay county, Mo., December 14, 1835. He departed this life April 30, 1929, at 11:30 pm, at the home of his son Sam, aged 98 years, 4 months and 16 days. He was the seventh child of a family of thirteen children, all of whom have preceded him in death except the two youngest, William of Newberg, Oregon, and Mrs. W. T. Beale of Fillmore. When two years of age his parents moved to Andrew county and settled on a farm west of Whitesville, known as the old Clemmens farm. Here his parents lived until their death at a ripe old age, the mother going first, the father a day later, and were buried in the same grave in the cemetery on their farm. On February 14, 1864, he was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth George, who died March 31, 1919. To this union was born three sons, William, who died in May, 1925, George Samuel of Whitesville, and Edward Loren of Hebron, Neb. Uncle Jesse, as he was familiarly called, served throughout the entire period of the Civil War in the Missouri Militia, being unable to serve in the U. S. army on account of the loss of one eye, which was always a bitter disappointment to him. After the war he settled on a farm near the old home place where he lived until the death of his wife, and since then he made his home with his son Sam. He is survived by two sons, 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, who with a host of other relatives and many friends will miss him. The funeral was conducted at the Rea church by Rev. 0. E. Wells of St. Joseph. Rev. Wells was a pastor of the family many years ago. The sons, Sam and Edward with their families, wish to express their appreciation to their friends for the kindly assistance in the time of need, also for the beautiful flowers and their arrangement at the church.
