Notes for GEORGE W. HENKEL:

It is most probable that he arrived on the ship "Coriolan" which arrived in New York from Bremen on August 2, 1852. The passenger list includes a George HENCKEL age 28 and a Katharina-Elis. age 21, his wife. They are listed as having come from Hess Darmstadt in Germany which matches his place of origin from the 1870 census. It could be that Katharina died because his wife in the 1870 census is listed as Anna. This information was obtained from the "Germans to America" series, volume 3 (June 1852- Sept 1852), page 303.

George HENKEL purchased two parcels of land on June 1, 1858, one of 40 acres and one of 80 acres. Both parcels were very close to those purchased by Joseph HINN.

Notes for GEORGE H. HENKEL:

George gave his daughter, Laura, $100 per month spending money while she was attending college at CIA in Texas. This was a substantial sum in those days and indicate that George was well off.

George took his granddaughters (Katherine, Edith, Florence and possibly Doris and Eloise) into town with him on one occaison and bought them ice cream cones. The girls remember this as a special time because their parents had little money and it was quite a treat.
