bullet  General Notes:

Lewis Hutton was a Nailmaker/Nailer of Canongate, Edinburgh. He was possibly the son of Andrew Hutton (flax draper) and Janet Clink and if so he was born on 28th May 1770 in Perth and baptised on 3rd June 1770. It appears that his son James was born in Perth in 1795 and on that record Lewis was described as a nailmaker in Perth. However, this is unusal as all his other children were born in Canongate, Edinburgh.
Lewis and family had a few run-ins with the law in relation to burglary. Three of his sons ended up being convicted and transported to Australia. These were Lewis jnr. in 1820, Andrew in 1821 and Alexander in 1833. In Edinburgh Advertiser of 17/07/1821 a report of Andrew's court case, states he, his father and another were charged with housebreaking and theft at a house in South Leith and with being 'habit and repute thieves'. Only Andrew, who pleaded guilty, was convicted. However, the report states the case ended with the following summary:
This boy appears to be have been another instance of neglected education, and what renders the case one of an unsually melancholy nature is, that Lewis Hutton, against whom the Lord Advocate deserted the diet, is the youth's father, who had another son transported last year.
It seems as another son, James, was convited of Piracy in an Australian Court in 1832.
Lewis died in the Edinburgh Infirmary in 1830 and desribed as a Nailer of Duncan's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh (in the 1841 census Lewis' son John is recorded with his family at Duncan's Close, 3 Canongate). Lewis is buried in Canongate Kirk (Church) graveyard.
