After the Deerfield Massacre in 1704, while in route to Canada, four year old Abigail Nim's father was killed. Not too much is known of what happened to Abigail (aka Marie-Elizabeth Stebenne) except that she might have been adopted by John Stebbins as she was later known to be baptisted as Marie-Elizabeth Stebenne. The Stebenne name is a French expression of the name Stebbins. While we have no records that Marie-Elizabeth was actually adopted into the Stebbins family, we are making that assumption until further evidence dictates the contrary . Note also that John Stebbins, Jr changed his name to Jean Stebbins I, and that other descendents changed their last name to Stebenne.
