222. Uriah⁵ SUTTON (Zebulon⁴, Patience³ MARTIN, John², John¹) was born in Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey July 21, 1741.⁽³¹⁶⁾ Uriah died February 2, 1840 in Bound Brook, Somerset County, New Jersey at 98 years of age.

He married Elizabeth BOCKOVER circa 1772 in New Jersey. Elizabeth was born 1751. Elizabeth died 1815 at 64 years of age.

His place of birth is not known. His grandfather moved from Piscataway to Basking Ridge about 1730 and his father leased land in the area in early 1747. It is not known whether his father came to Somerset County with his grandfather in 1730 or if he followed at a later date. Uriah was living in Somerset County prior to his sixth birthday.

The following appears in "Genealogical Notes of the Sutton Family of New Jersey" by Edward F.H. Sutton published in 1900:

Uriah lived at Kimball's Mountain, in Somerset County, N.J., and attended the Presbyterian Church at Basking Ridge. He was captain of New Jersey State Troops (see Stryker's "Officers and Men of New Jersey", page 413) and there is record of his presence at the battles of Monmouth, Watsessing, and Connecticut Farms. His granddaughter, Mrs. Ruth Howell, states that, when the Continental Army lay at Morristown, Washington often dined at his house. A large dog used to follow the general about, and on its back Uriah's little son Stephen (Mrs. Howell's father) was often allowed to ride. . . . Uriah attained the great age of ninety-eight years, dying in 1839, at the home of his son Stephen in Bound Brook, N.J. He was blind for nearly thirty years before his death.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Patriot Index show Uriah's date of death as 2 February 1840 rather than 1839 as in the item quoted above. The DAR date is consistent with the quoted statement that he "attained the great age of 98 years" and will be accepted until proven erroneous.

Uriah SUTTON and Elizabeth BOCKOVER had the following children:
