• Burial*: 1871; Orland Memorial Park Cemetery, Orland Park, Cook Co., Illinois, USA; Matthew Wells, son of John Wells and Mary Dring, was a native of Walpole St Peter, Norfolk, England. While his birth was registered in the second quarter of 1848 in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England, he was baptized in Apr 1848 at Walpole St Peter in Norfolk. (It was not just Cambridgeshire BMD's that were registered in Wisbech, but also those of Norfolk.) Matthew immigrated to the United States as an infant with his widowed mother, siblings, and maternal grandparents aboard the Switzerland, arriving in New York on 30 Jun 1848. The family settled in Orland, Cook, Illinois. His mother remarried about 1849.
  
  Matthew served in Company G of the 39th Illinois Infantry, as did his brother Thomas Humphrey. His service entry date was 9 Mar 1864. He survived the Civil War, mustering out on 30 May 1865. Matthew had been a prisoner of war. He married Susannah Rachael Hewson, daughter of William Hewson and Susannah Murfitt, about 1870. They had one child, a daughter, Flora, born in 1871. Matthew died that same year and was interred in Orland Memorial Park Cemetery. His widow remarried in 1873. Matthew's headstone was erected years later, in 1934.
