• Note*: 3 March 1844; Cleveland Co., North Carolina, USA; The records of Antioch Church show that on 3-3-1844, Gilly Wells, ''joined by experience,'' (by conversion), with ''Simson Wells'' following her into the fold on 9-12-1844. The death of ''Sister Gilly Wells'' we noted at the December monthly conference that year. Shortly after his conversion, James Simpson ran afoul of the stern discipline practised in that congregation. At the October conference, 1846, he was charged with ''illegitimacy''. The following December conference ''took up the case of Simpson Wells''. He refused to hear the church & was excluded. He was not reconciled to the church until the protracted meeting of August/September 1874, just after the death o his second wife. James Simpson Wells apparently remained on the Kings Creek plantation which he had inherited under the terms of his fathers will. He died intestate, and Aaron L. Wells & M[oses] Gaines Wells served as administrators (documents among family papers). James Simpson Wells is found on the Cleveland Co. NC census for 1850, 1860 & 1870. James Simpson Wells was evidently the first of the Wells family (apart from his Whisonant & Hardin relatives) to affiliate with Antioch Church. Antioch's records begin in 1815 & continue without significant interruption. Death of members were regularly noted in the minutes of monthly conferences, but John & Britter Wells, and Isaac & Ann Wells are not recorded. The only other Wells mentioned before 1874 was a Sarah Wells, who in June 1849, was excluded for absenting herself for 12 months from church. Although no tombstone or obituary for Emily Ann has ever been found, her date of death is given as 3-3-1893. This comes from the Bible of her parents that is alleged to be in the possession of her brother's descendants in Utah. She died of cancer at age 49 years, that was the result of a sore on her face that did not heal. Family legend has it that Emily Ann was living near Grover NC at the time of her death, and that a local undertaker handled her funeral arrangements. She is buried at the Wells Family Cemetery, Cleveland Co. NC, in an unmarked grave.^2,1

York County, South Carolina Marriage and Death Notices, 1823-65, Issue of February 10, 1859 On the 1st day of February, by the same, Mr. Alexander V. A. Wells and Miss Lucy Ann C. Blalock, both of North Carolina. Among the stories told of ''Dan'' Wells is one in which he rode a large white horse. He would ride the horse to see a young friend. To get to the lady's house he had to go through some heavy woods. He was always told to be hold before night time as ''there was something in those woods''. Seems once he tarried too long at the lady's house and found himself in the woods long after nightfall. Sure enough he ''saw something'' that scared him so badly that he jumped off his horse and ran the rest of the way home. Needless to say his horse was home long before him. Another story is gold of his hatred of flies. He once said he hoped there were no files at his funeral. He was buried in a blinding snow storm, with the snow blowing into the open ends of the covered wagon onto his coffin. He is buried at Antioch Baptist Church, Antioch, SC.^1,2

  Died Sunday, Buried Tuesday. David Wells died Sunday at 1 o'clock at the home of his son, Boyce Wells, He has been a sufferer for several years from chronic bronchitis. Mr. Wells was born in Lincoln, North Carolina, June 10, 1844. He joined the Mormon church in 1883 and came west 31 years ago, locating in Manassa, Colorado. Ten years later he came to American Fork. He was an old Confederate soldier and was wounded at the battle of Richmond and again at Petersburg. From the injury in the leg from a ''minning ball'' he never recovered. He was twelve years toll gate keeper at the mouth of American Fork canyon and was noted for his honesty and integrity. His wife, who was Miss Susan Gordon, died three years age. He leaves a son John, still in North Carolina. His other children Frances Wells, Boyce Wells, Mrs. Sarah Anderson and Mrs. Gertrude Brown all live in American Fork. The funeral was held Tuesday in the Third Ward Meeting House. Bishop J.R. Hindley presided. The other speakers were Henry Miller, M.H. Fitzgerald and president Stephen L. Chipman. The ward choir supplied the music. David and his wife, Susan are buried at the LDS Church, 31 North Church St., American Fork, UT.^2,1
