- Wilber F. Parker was born in January, 1842 in Wells, Rutland County, Vermont, son of Abel and Amanda (Goodspeed) Parker. He embarked in the general jewelry trade in 1862, at Rutland, Vt., and in 1871 he sett led in Fairhaven, continuing his business in fine gold and silver wares, diamonds and all fancy goods pertaining to his business.1,2

On July 29th, 1719, Ebenezer Parmelee, Sr., was deeded the property for 40 pounds (approximately $150,000 current value). Ebenezer was a clockmaker. In the eighteenth century, clockmakers were highly respected specialists and clocks were a coveted status symbol. Only 5% of householders in the Connecticut River Valley owned tall clocks before the Revolution. Ebenezer is responsible for the parlour paneling and other fine finish carpentry in the House.
In 1795, Ebenezer Parmelee, Jr., sold the Hyland House to his mother’s cousin, Seth Cruttenden, then 42 years old, whose family included only his wife, Anna Rossiter.2 - Ebenezer died on September 17, 1777 at age 86.1
