Samuel Waterhouse
Marriage |
|
Samuel Waterhouse married Sarah Alling. |
Note |
|
Why I think Samuel and Sarah Waterhouse were the parents of Cassander: The first record of Cassander was the birth of his daughter Harriet, recorded in 1796 in Wallingford, CT. If the age on his tombstone is correct, he was only 20 at that time. We also know from various census records that he was born in Connecticut. So he was either born in Wallingford, or born somewhere else in the state and moved to Wallingford as a very young man. The only Watrous/Waterhouse family that is of record in Wallingford at the time is Samuel and Sarah Waterhouse. Also, there appears to be no record of Cassander's birth. Connecticut towns were recording births at that time, and that information has been summarized in the Barbour collection, which is at Ancestry.com. The LDS church has also extracted many Connecticut birth records. When visiting in Connecticut, I reviewed birth records from Wallingford and other nearby towns myself. There are no children recorded to Samuel and Sarah at all in any of those sources, and no Cassander or Samuel Waterhouse born about 1776 who is not already accounted for as someone else. The Wallingford birth records have a gap between sometime in the 1760s to sometime in the 1790s. So for Cassander to be the son of anyone other than Samuel and Sarah, not only would he have to have moved to Wallingford alone at a young age, he would have to have moved from another town whose birth records from the period did not survive. Also, researcher Margaret Austin, with whom I have been unable to get in contact, told my mother in 1999 that she had some correspondence indicating that Cassander might be the son of this couple. Finally, there is evidence that Cassander's other name might be Samuel (see name in 1860 census), which would fit with being Samuel Waterhouse's son. The one thing that bothers me is that Cassander and Esther did not name any children Samuel or Sarah, although they did name children after her parents.1,2 |

Sarah Duffell1
Marriage |
18 July 1786 |
Sarah Duffell married Benjamin Turner, son of Robert Turner and Abigail Burne, on 18 July 1786 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Swedesboro, Gloucester County, NJ.2 |
Note |
|
The name Duffel is now spelled Duffield. Because Sarah named a son John Duffel Turner, and because a John Duffield inventoried the estate of Benjamin's father, Robert Turner, I think that John Duffield/Duffel must be the name of Sarah's father or brother. But I have looked at Glochester County wills and deeds and have not found anything specific that would tell me who John Duffield was and if he had a daughter named Sarah. Needs further research. A later John Duffield owned land adjoining Benjamin Turner and later Michael Turner. |
