Biography* In the January 2001 issue of "Carolina Trees & Branches" a publication of the Family Research Society of Northeastern North Carolina, is the following:

"Murderous Gang Another attempt at Murder - We learn that on Thursday night lat, several negroes went to the house of Mr. Henry Culpepper, residing near Maj. Farange's on the Dismal Swamp Canal, and having drawn him to the door by knocking on it, one of them discharged a gun at him, which fortunately, however, did not execution. Anticipating another fire from the wretches, Mr. Culpepper fell, to induce a belief that he was wounded; notwithstanding which they fired again, and put two balls through the door, but completely failed in inflicting any injury on Mr. C. - The Miscreants then made their escape." From 'American Beacon - Monday, June 16, 1823.

"We learn by a gentleman from North Carolina, that on Friday morning last, about daylight, Mr. Henry Culpepper, who resided near Major Farange's on the Canal, in Camden County, NC, and keeps up a small shop, was called up by a negro man, who slept in the house that night, to furnish some liquor; he had only proceeded a few steps toward his shop, situated near his residence, when two guns were discharged at him in quick succession. It is believed that Mr. Culpepper would have been killed on the spot, had he not been protected by a post, into which 13 or 14 slugs entered. Mr. C. instantly fell, and upon examination, seven slugs were found to have taken effect in different parts of his body, some of which have been extracted, but it is the opinion of the attending physician that his wounds will prove mortal. The negro mentioned has made his escape and is strongly suspected of being concerned with those who fired at Mr. C." - from 'American Beacon - Tuesday, August 19, 1823.

"Mr. Henry Culpepper who was shot by some unknown persons on Friday morning the 15th inst. at his residence on the Canal, in Camden County (NC) as mentioned in our paper a few days since, died of his wounds on Tuesday, the 19th inst. after much suffering. The perpetrator of this foul deed has not been discovered." - from American Beacon, Thursday, August 28, 1823.

(M1) Research note31 October 2011 The children of Nicholas Culpepper of Camden Co., NC are unproven. The 1810 census shows that he had three sons born between 1800 and 1810.
Benjamin Franklin Culpepper has been assigned as a son of Nicholas because of their association with each other in Camden Co. NC deed records, and because of the apparent use of the name Nicholas among descendants of Benjamin.
Accountis Culpepper was onced speculated as a son based on his being the right age and in the right location. His son Joshua might indicate that he was a son of Joshua rather than of Nicholas, but Joshua's known children were all born before 1800, and Accountis was born around 1805. In any event, Accountis DNA testing now suggests that Accountis is a member of the Thomas/William branch and not of the Henry III/Henry IV branch that Nicholas descends from.

Accountis Culpepper

M, (circa 1804 - between 1858 and 1860)
FatherRobert Culpepper (c 1775 - bt 1817 - 1818)
DNA* Accountis has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of Thomas Culpepper, who is a son of Henry Culpepper, Jr. and grandson Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA.1
Birth*circa 1804 Accountis was born at North Carolina circa 1804. While DNA shows that Accountis descends from William of Norfolk, there is no proof that the father of Accountis is Robert, who is a grandson of William. However, based on ages and locations, Robert is the most likely father.2
Marriage*circa 1840 He married Susan (?) at North Carolina circa 1840.
1850 Census*1 June 1850 Accountis was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Camden Co., North Carolina.3
Deed*11 March 1855 He granted a deed on 11 March 1855 at Camden Co., North Carolina,

Book AA, p. 111: 11 Mar 1855 — Accountis Culpepper and wife Susan to Joseph McDowell, for $25, our one-eighth part of the tract of Zale Sawyer, consisting of 40 acres.4
Death*between 1858 and 1860 He died between 1858 and 1860
Accountis is presumed to have died after the conception of his youngest son, Leroy, and before the 1860 census when his young son Henry is enumerated in another household.
(2) Research note31 October 2011 He is referenced in a research note for Nicholas Culpepper of Camden Co., NC.5,2
