Biography* Biography written in 1895, while John was still living:
John F. Culpepper, Sr., Whitesburg, Carroll Co., Ga., son of Joel and Elizabeth (Whitaker) Culpepper, was born in Coweta County, Ga., May 17, 1835. His paternal grandfather, Malachi Culpepper, was one of the early settlers of Morgan county, and was a soldier in the revolutionary war. His maternal grandparents, John and Polly Whitaker (nee Holliway), were among the early settlers of Coweta county. His father was born in Morgan County, April 1, 1802, where he was reared, and lived until 1827, when he removed to Coweta county and settled in the woods. Mr. Culpepper was reared in Coweta county, and received a good common school education, earning the money himself that paid his school expenses one year. In 1855, he engaged as a clerk in a store in Carrollton, and after one year's experience "opened up" for himself, and continued in business until 1862, when he enlisted in Company B, Seventh regiment, Confederate cavalry (Capt. L. J. Smith). At the end of a year he hired a substitute, and entered into a contract with the secretary of war to gather material for the manufacture of ammunition for the armies, which contract continued until the surrender. After the war he entered mercantile life again in Newnan, Ga., and in 1877 lost everything, and went on the farm where he now lives. He made two starts in life, and failed to attain his end; but in his last undertaking, that of farming, he has succeeded beyond his most sanguine expectations, and rightly feels proud and exultant over his success. Mr. Culpepper was married in 1857 to Miss Epsie Boon—born in Carroll county—daughter of Jesse and Nancy (Lester) Boon, old settlers of the county. To them five children have been born—three living: Lucinda, wife of W. C. Branan; Anna, wife of T. E. Walten; and Vela. Mrs. Culpepper is a member of the Methodist church, and he is a royal arch Mason. Mr. Culpepper is a wide-awake, progressive farmer, and very much respected by all who know him.9

Death*12 June 1913 He died at Fayette Co., Alabama, on 12 June 1913 at age 71.
Biography*July 2008 Margaret Lindsey Smith wrote: "My Alabama Berrys were/are in Fayette Co. William Berry (1804-1881), a son of John Berry (1752-18??) and Martha Collier (c1780-c1797), was orphaned at an early age, at which time he and his siblings were parceled out to various persons in Jackson Co. GA. Sometime after his marriage to Sarah Nelson (1805-1883) in Jackson Co., he and his wife moved to Alabama...
"Their children included John Nelson Berry (1823-1877, m Elizabeth Moore), Nancy Berry (1825-1906, m George Washington Brazil), Henry B Berry (1829-1895, m Elizabeth Farquhar) (sic... See next biographical note), Silvester Berry (1831-1852, m Sarah R Johnson), Elizabeth Berry (c1833-?, m ? Moore and then John Rainey), Robert L Berry (c1839-?, m Annie Hyder), William Berry (1842-1913, m Mariah G Culpepper), Sentha Berry (1844-1899, m Albert A Dobbs), Joshua Berry (1844-1862), Sarah J Berry (1948-1914, m J R Stephens), Wilburn T Berry (1850-1926, m Fannie Fullerton and then Dorothy E Fowler).
"Some of these Berrys stayed in AL, others moved on to TX, OK and
elsewhere."3
Biography13 February 2013 Terry Cargile wrote: "I am a great grandson of William Berry, Jr. and Mariah Culpepper Berry. My grandmother was Hattie Berry Jones, youngest child of Mariah and William, Jr, who inherited the 'Berry Place' when Mariah Culpepper Berry died in 1947. My mother inherited the place when her mother died and I inherited the place in about 1990...
"William Berry, SR and wife, Sarah, lived with her parents, Sylvester and Margaret Nelson for a short time after their marriage in Jackson County, Ga. During this time, their first two children were born in Georgia --John Nelson in 1823 and Nancy in 1925. Shortly afterwards, the 6 of them joined the great westward migration and settled in Limestone County, (Athens) Alabama. as documented by the 1830 census. Sons Henry and Sylvester were born in Limestone County. Records show that William, SR received a Land Grant in Fayette County in 1835 and family moved there where the rest of his children were born and he and Sarah are buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Somewhat sketchy records indicate that all of the Berry's of age served in the Confederate Army. Indications are that sons Robert L, Henry, and Joshua were killed during the war. Joshua died of unknown causes and was buried in Fayette in 1862. Brothers Robert and Henry were members of the 41st Alabama Infantry and are believed to have been killed in the Tennessee campaign of 1863. Henry B. Berry was not the son of William, Sr, but the son of Thompson Berry and was buried next to his father in Pleasant Hill METHODIST church in Berry, Alabama. There are no indications that OUR Henry Berry was ever married.4
