"Last Monday afternoon, a very serious accident happened about one mile East of Sneedville. An auto driven by Arthur Trent of Rogersville, not the Arthur at Trent's Chapel, was going eastward from Sneedville. In it were the driver, above named. In addition to the driver were Robert Jones of the third district, upper end of our county, and Mrs. Henry (Mae) Surgenor, address Kyles Ford, who lives about seven miles east of Sneedville. A truck, loaded with tobacco was heading westward towards Sneedville. The truck belonged to the Hatfield Lumber Co. and was driven by Charlie Seal, who suffered some cuts. The auto was owned by Arley Stapleton, Sr., who operates the Star Mail Route between Rogersville and Sneedville. The car in question was not the car which the mail was being carried on that particular day. The two met head-on at a curve about one mile east of Sneedville. Mr. Jones and Mrs. Surgenor were severely injured. Mr. Jones is a man nearing his sixties. We are informed that he was the father of several children and a brother to the Jones who was killed back in the fall and that was the cause which brought him to Sneedville last Monday--that being Circuit Court day. Mrs. Surgenor, the wife of our good friend, Henry Surgenor, was well known and was a kindly, Christian lady. After the crash the victims were picked up and brought to Sneedville in a passing car and were treated in Dr. L.A. Mulsand's Office. Dr. Mulsand called an ambulance from Rogersville and went with Mr. Jones and Mrs. Surgenor to a hospital in Morristown. Mr. Trent was released by the Doctor to go home after treatment. He is reported to be coming along alright. Mr. Jones suffered a fractured skull, internal injuries and cuts. He died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Mrs. Surgenor suffered complete fracture of the skull and other injuries. She died at 6:05 a.m. Wednesday morning. Announcement for the funerals have not been made at this date, but will be completed soon. It will be recalled that triplets were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weston last Summer and that Mrs. Weston died. Then one of the triplets dies, leaving two triplets. There was no mother or sister to care for the triplets, but now deceased Mrs. Mae Surgenor took the two ___ babies and cared for them like a mother. What greater Christian service could crown her last days of living. Our Lord told us the greatest Religion of all is to visit the widows and orphans. Mrs. Surgenor demonstrated that Religion. Mr. Jones family, relatives and friends have our deep sympathies. He has been in our office many times and his behavior bespake a gentleman. The poor fellow left his home and family to come to town on business and never returned to his home again. The writer and several other citizens carefully carried him from the Doctor's office to the Ambulance which took him and Mrs. Surgenor to Morristown. I hope he and his family will be reunited in the Life beyond the grave, where they can forever enjoy the happiness in that home Apostol John tells us the Lord said he was going away to prepare. To his bereaved ones, you have my deepest sympathies. We feel badly for Henry Surgenor and his family. They have our profound sympathies. The separations will be difficult. Sorrow engulfs their home. The land for the Ben Hur Elementary School & this cemeter was donated by Ben Snead and his wife, Jane Headrick Snead, & when the land ceased to be used for a school in 1954, it verted to the nearest heir of Ben & Jane Snead which was Paul Snead. He later sold the land to Orville Kelly & he sold the land to the Corinth Church which joined with the cemetery.
