Another Old Citizen Answers the Last Summons
At the ripe old age of 87 years, 4 months and 4 days, Valentine Zimmer passed away from this earth last Wednesday evening about six o'clock.
Valentine Zimmer was the son of Martin and Mary Zimmer and was born in Alsace, Germany, November 10, 1818. At the age of eleven years he came to this country and settled in Salem township about a mile west of Adamsville. August 5, 1843, he married Salome Gaumer who still survives him.
Twelve years ago Mr. and Mrs. Zimmer celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Since that time more than twelve years have passed away, and while they were not without trials and troubles, yet most of that time contentment and happiness reigned supreme in their home as it had done for half a century before.Thus the happy couple lived together for more than 62 years until seperated by death.
The deceased was a firm believer in the Supreme Being and at the age of sixteen united with the New Hope Evangelical Lutheran church. he continued to worship with the members of that church as long as he lived. He was faithful in his attendance at worship and his regular attendance gave inspiration to his fellow members.
Mr. Zimmer was so well known in this community that comment on his life as a citizen is unnecessary. He was a good neighbor, and never betrayed the confidence or trust of a friend. In his home he was kind and affectionate and endeavored to make his home a happy one for himself and wife which constituted his family.
After coming to this country Mr. Zimmer spent all but fourteen years of his long life in and near Adamsville. Those fourteen years he was a resident of Guernsey county. About two years ago failing health compelled him to retire from active work and he moved from his farm in Adams township to this village. Since coming to this place he has been an invalid although able to walk about the house most of the time. He continued in this way until his death.
Besides the grief-stricken wife the departed one leaves three sisters. They are: Mrs. Catherine Shurtz, of this village, Mrs. Elizabeth Buchman of Somerset, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Faro, of Vandalia, Ill.
Funeral Services were conducted Friday afternoon at the New Hope Lutheran church by Rev. J. J. S. Rumbarger and the remains were interred in the cemetery at that place.
